i was just on gun broker.com. there is a guy there selling new factory take off barrels for rem 700's. it made me curious, how expensive would it be to have one of these installed to my rifle. i have a 300 win mag, the barrel i would be interested in would be a 30-06. of course i know the barrel would have to be fitted to my action. i am not sure about the bolt, if it would have to have a new bolt, or if mine would work. what else would have to be done? thanks.

You would need a new bolt fo fit the smaller case head, and the magazine would need a spacer to fill up about an extra inch. It would be a better idea to just buy a 30/06

Yes. My rifle is now a 300 win mag. The barrel i was looking at is a 30-06. I really do not need to do this, as i can just download to 30-06 levels. There is nothing wrong with my rifle. It is just that the barrel is $20.00. It seems like a good deal. But sometimes good deals really are not. If it is going to cost $300.00 to change it over, it really is not much of a deal at all.

I meant that the cartridges are pretty close in size. I think that the overall length is the same, and the ..300 Win Magnum rim is only about .050" bigger in diameter than the .30-06 rim.

It may be that you won't need another bolt if an extractor is available to reach further than yours does. I don't know if that one is doable but it's worth asking someone who's familiar with how much leeway is too much on the boltface.
