I am all excited about a new to me custom FN Mauser rifle on the way to my FFL.

It's a 7mm Mag. 24" bbl.

As well you should be!!!!

Do tell us more. Who made it. Where are you shooting it? Why 7Mag? All the details.

I don't know who did it. What I like is that stripe on the pistol grip!

The work on the stock around the bolt handle is good as well.

Savage;

Ribbon checkering like that is very difficult to execute correctly. Depending on the fine detail of the stock, when it was made, and who made it, the original cost may have run a very pretty penny. Is the barrel an original or an aftermarket? It'd be interesting to know if the action was blueprinted also, but if the thing shoots bugholes it doesn't matter.

Thanks to all for the encouraging comments. The seller signed for my certified letter with the check on 10/07 and my ffl dealer said he called for the data.

So it may be on it's way now!

Here is another picture of it. I found my 7mm RM dies, brass and ammo!

I dig the FN Mausers. This is a nice looking example.

I also have a 7mm Rem Mag and love it. What a great cartridge from way back in 1962.

Enjoy it!

The rifle came in this week and I shot it.

The 7mm RM ammo I had was 175 factory and old 140 X bullet handloads. Accuracy was poor with keyholes from the X's.

I discovered that the barrel's twist is 1-12"! Standard for the 7mm RM is 1-9".

There was one tight group with 120gr Noslers at 100yds.

The stock's quality of workmanship and detail are better to the eye than pictures can tell. It needs some finish on it so as to have a glow and shine that I prefer and perhaps protect it if it ever sees rain.

The action is indeed a genuine FN however it only has a trigger safety.

The rifle is almost 9 lbs as shown.

The stock has been glass bedded and has no cracks. I paid $560.00 delivered
with those scope mounts.

Since I have had a complete, to me, battery of guns since the 1950's my current passion is bolt rifles with fine walnut stocks.

When time permits I will show it to a couple of smith's to see how to "finish" this rifle. Minimum will be better looking mounts and scope.

If you can get that 120 Nosler load over a chrono, you can then apply Greener's formula & get a fair idea what will stabilize at what speed out of that barrel. But I can't imagine what possible use the previous owner had thunked up for that combination of twist & caliber!

Of course several custom barrel makers will make another tube with the exact duplication of the outer contour and a tighter twist inside. Lilja & Krieger are the first two that come to mind. To my mind that's not a bad idea since the stock's probably worth over a grand by itself. Any chance of finding out who made it?

There is no obvious marking on who did that stock but it is indeed superb.

I will look closer. The seller did not seem to know and presented it as a stock that someone put a lot of work into.

Lets see how it shoots with 120's at longer ranges. I could use it as a summer coyote rifle since the woodchucks are gone here in the Northeast.

I shot this custom FN 7mm RM again today. Since the the twist is confirmed as 1-12" it won't shoot 140's however 120's did did well today.

It made 1" and 1/2" two shot groups at 100yds and then at 200 yds. it put two into 1" and last from a hot bbl. one inch again.

The load is the 120 gr Nosler BT over a full load of 3031 and 215's.

With that stock, which is superb to my eye, it's like a gal with great legs. I will find a place for it. :D

I have shot the rifle some and discovered that it has a 1-12" twist in it's 24" barrel.

Thus it will only stabilize 120's or the 130 Speer. No problem, it's stock alone is worth twice what I paid for the entire rifle. :)

I have rifles with both irons and scopes. For instance I have a pre-64 M70 battery and they all have irons and scopes.

That rifle is going to be a coyote and open country deer rifle. No irons needed.

Here it is now with a 3-9 Leupold on it.
