Customs and Border Protection Chooses Glock as New Handgun

Respectfully, that doesn’t make any sense to me.

The only “problem” I can think of is that the light rail of a G17 was too long and CBP wanted a shorter rail, but a dustcover instead. That also doesn’t make much sense because the total length is the same as a 17. It’s got a minor aesthetic change.

A 17 or 17 MOS would’ve met the CBP requirements as well as this 47, so this is probably just all marketing by Glock to see if another model is in demand. It’s not for the public; neither was the 19X, but like the 19X, it will be available if enough people want it.

They also stipulated that it accept a shorter slide, so the G19 slide will work on the G47. If you put a regular G17 slide on a regular G19 frame, it looks like this...

If you watch the TFB video posted earlier, you will see that a regular old G17 or G17 MOS will not fit the bill for what they wanted. They wanted “100%” parts comononality between the larger gun and the smaller gun. Presumably, the way this gun is designed, you can put the G19 slide on the G47 frame and have something like a G45. I assume you could maybe also put the G47 slide on the G19 frame and create yet another gun. This could not be achieved by buying a regular G17 and G19.

They asked for it, Glock made it and had to call it something, and that something is “Glock 47”.

So it’s CBP that makes no sense. Glock is just giving them what they want. I get that.

I guess it’s more a question of poor stewardship of my tax dollars than a gun I don’t get.

Oh well. I usually think their stuff is great. Not this time.

I think Glock is great overall. It’s what I use.

That's pretty cool that parts can change between all of the new ones they're getting. Probably makes the parts room nice and tidy:)

What might have been interesting is three pistols based on the 19-length dust cover:

The Glock 47, the Glock 19 and then a 26L (or Glock 49) that would basically be the G26 frame with a 19 slide.
