There is a rifle at the dicks sporting goods by my house that has a rifle on sale that is interesting. It has a 26" bull barrel, which makes it pretty front heavy and heavy in general. How much would it cost to have this barrel cut down to 22". Thanks

It's still gonna be too heavy after you pay to cut it off 4".

Save your time & money and buy a lighter rifle if thats what you want to end up with.

I'd like to know more about the rifle before saying for sure I'd do it. Generally any decent gunsmith could do it for a small fee. $25-$50 would be in the ballpark. It is possibly a DIY project if you want to spend a few dollars for a crowning tool. It would be easier with stainless because you wouldn't have to re-blue, but if you're not anal about perfect finishing a little cold blue on the end of the barrel works.

But as RC says it may be better to just buy a different rifle. On a sporter weight barrel it wouldn't make much difference in weight, but 4" less bull barrel might. I know it could make a huge difference in balance.

I already have a .270 hunting rifle. I just figured for 450 bucks a nice tactical varmint grade rem 700 would be nice.

What caliber is it? What distance do you plan to shoot it? I would look at posted velocity for your round from various barrel lengths. Compare the wind drift a bit and see what you are really gaining or losing with a barrel length from 16"-26". Most of my shooting wouldn't notice one bit of difference if I cut the barrel down to the non-sbr minimum of 16" (plus a smidge for good measure). The velocity and wind drift difference at the most common distances I shoot in negligible so cutting it way down is an option. Now certainly people take long shots and cutting down may have appreciable drawbacks. I'd take a long look at the shooting you plan to do with the rifle and then figure out how barrel length actually influences that shooting, and cut accordingly.

i have been quoted $150+ and you are looking at diss assembly. reassembly and some time. Lift some weights, harden up and deal with the heavier gun. varmint and tactical guns arent meant to be carried like a deer rifle.

Why cant you use it for deer. Its chambered in .308, so it will kill them. 4 in off the barrel would work alot better for walking around in the woods.

It will work for deer.

But just as 4" less barrel will work better, so will 3 pounds less weight work better than a 20" HB rifle.

Judging by the used gun racks around here, I would say you could just buy a 700 with a lighter weight barrel for that amount of money.
