Cutting the Barrel...

whole short barrel rifle thing
16" is the legal requirement, so you'd have to chop off a lot of bbl. Also the formwork for a SBR is no more difficult than a suppressor IIRC. :)

I'm frustrated that Remington used a "varmint" rifle platform with a 1/12 twist when using "factory" ammo, the effective range has been only out to 200 yards (for DRT action).

It's a varmint rifle made to shoot lighter bullets at high velocities, so I assume that is why Remington went with a 26" 1:12 barrel. If you are having issues hitting beyond 200 yards and not being able to stop a varmint in it's track I'm not sure what cutting off 4" will do. I would try better ammo more suited to the barrel and keep it at 26". Or sell it and start over again with length and twist more suited to what you want to shoot (as in heavier bullets).

I'm aware of the form 4, and thankfully, when that happens, the Trust will take care of that. However, my issue is the cost of both a short barrel and a can, that's what I was specifically talking about, but failed to differentiate it.

In terms of a 26" barrel that shoots a high velocity rounds, and I love them too... but within 100 yards. I'm comfortable chopping the barrel down even 8 inches, to make it a little lighter (that will not affect accuracy nearly as much as most people would assume, otherwise, they wouldn't make them in the rugers). However, the 1/12 twist limits me to maximum 60gr.... which would work, but they are not consistent, and bedding the stock wouldn't help. They start tumbling from what I've seen at about 100 yards and are about 2-3" groups... rather than the sub 1" that I get with the 40-55gr out to 100 yards.

Truthfully, I think that for the time being it would be best like you mentioned lipad to just keep it the way it is. However, shortening a bull barrel, threading it, and canning it would help with the short range issue that I have now, and would still be really effective out to 100 yards, especially with the noise reduction.

For the longer yard issues, I will just have to upgrade to the .300 WSM :)

I'm sure no one would have any qualms with adding another rifle to the arsenal for long range shooting. Does that sound like a fairly decent plan? I'm curious to ask because this is the High road...

no harm in buying another rifle :D

i took mine to the smith's today. cutting it down to 24" and rebluing the crown. should be good?

thanks guys
