I bought a Mountain Rifle last night on the internet. Hopefully I'll get it sometime next week. The owner told me it is missing the forward barrel wedge. Any idea where I could get one? Also, can the rifle be fired with only one wedge?

Thanks.

Check online with Dixie Gun Works, Log Cabin Shop, & Track of The Wolf.
Maybe giving them a call to ask if a wedge in stock will fit yours.

Probably OK with one wedge, however the purpose of the wedge is to keep the barrel firmly in the stock and prevent movement of the barrel, especially when shooting it.

If you are skilled with a file and hacksaw you can probably make a suitable wedge from a piece of mild steel flat stock. It would also involve a hammer and anvil but the project should be fun to try. Otherwise the above advice is very good.

Thanks guys. I don't think I'll shoot it until I get a wedge. I guess I'll be making some phone calls on Monday. However, I do like Steel Horse's idea. I have a friend who does blacksmith work...hmmmm...

Track of the Wolf part number KEY-CVA-I should work just fine. It will be a little long but easy to grind some off. My CVA Mtn rifle from the late 70's is as accurate as any I have ever shot. Good luck

Deer Creek Products has a lot of CVA parts. Bought a barrel from them a couple of years back. Good people. You could fire it with one wedge but I would not recommend it. They are good, accurate rifles. Got one a while back but have not taken the time to try it out yet. I have several other early CVA's and they are all great shooters.

Given that plenty of CVA's other products only had one wedge to begin with, you're probably OK to fire the rifle as-is. Blank replacement wedges are available from Dixie Gun Works, and Deer Creek Products may have originals in stock. I just saw some on Gunbroker.com, as well. You're in fine shape.

Thanks everyone for your input., I sure appreciate it. Believe it or not, I'm 50 years old and this will be the first CVA rifle I have ever owned. I've always leaned towards TCs and Lymans. However, Friday night I was cruising the web and saw the Mountain Rifle for sale, and decided I really needed to own one. The rifle I am purchasing may require a bit of work, but wow, these guns are beautiful. Apparently mine will come with a brass patchbox and a pewter nosecap. I'm not sure how that will look but there it is.

Well, I received the rifle tonight. It is a disaster. The bore is so rusty I got my range rod stuck on its first trip down the barrel with a Kroil soaked patch. The seller said there was no rust in the bore. Oh, okay.

The hammer will not stay at full or half cock and the triggers feel like mush. Additionally, the seller used duct tape to secure the barrel to the stock for shipping but didn't put any padding in between, so the stock looks like a beaver gnawed on it. I'm going to have to sink money into it just to make it a wallhanger. :banghead:

However, tonight wasn't a total loss. I also took delivery on a used but beautiful Pietta 1860 Army with a half fluted cylinder and a 5.5 inch barrel as well as brand new Pietta 1851 Navy "Hickok" model in 36 caliber. Wow, that Navy is purty. :D
