Looking to get my CWP and just curious how long it takes, what I can expect to do, and if there are common disqualifiers. I live in South Carolina, since I am sure it varies state to state.

And I tried to look for some of this on google, but mostly found requirements. Nothing detailed.

I googled SC concealed weapons permit for you

and what I found was the application. I forgot to get a link, it is easy enough for you to find. It says that it will take 90 days to process the application. You probably also need to take a couyrse beforehand and those can take a little while to get into. It may or may not take the full 90 days to get approved. In Maine they 30 days to approve or reject. The last several times that I have been in to renew they tell me that it could take up to 3 months. I smile and nod and walk out the door. Usually 2 or three days before the 30 days is up I call in to make sure that it is going to be ready. When they tell me that it might take longer, I tell them that according to the law, and I cite the section, that they have to have it ready within the 30 days. Usually, I get a call the same or next day letting me know that it is ready. Remember, depending on your state laws, they have to give a reason for denial. Insisting that they adhere to the law as you have to is not a legitimate reason to rejcted.

Search out a course and they will answer all your questions for you.

I'm in SC, when I sent in my info last year it took almost exactly 90 days. In fact, IIRC it took 93 or 94 calendar days but they aren't clear on the website or application whether it's 90 calendar days or 90 working days. I sent it in in May 2009, received the permit in the mail in August 2009.

1). Take SLED mandated 8 hour class which includes a 50 question test where you must score at least 70%. The test is so easy I don't see how anyone could possibly fail. You also must fire 50 rounds at a b-27 target and land 70% anywhere on the silhouette.

2). Complete application (you will submit this application along with your training certificate and payment when you get fingerprinted)

3). Get fingerprinted. These now must be digital so the classroom instructor will most likely NOT be able to do this for you anymore.

4). Pay SLED $50 money order or certified check for the background check.

5). State law says they have 90 days to process your request and issue your permit but do not be surprised if it takes a little longer than that.

On average how much does it cost from start to finish, and do they make you use their gn or do you bring your own

Depends on the class - most are from $60 to $120. Some include prints (since digital was delayed again), others don't. Plus the SLED fee of $50. As for using your own gun - the classes I know about do not require it, but do allow it.

It will almost always take three months. From what I understand, SLED hates issuing CCW permits, but they have to. In retailation, they take their time to process the application.

$50 for the application. Typically $50-60 or maybe more for the class. The instructor may or may not have handguns available for your use.

Digital fingerprints are not required. S.L.E.D. (State Law Enforcement Division) had mandated them, but found that it was not allowed under the statutes. So, they recinded the order.

The issuing time has gotten better. Like all government agencies, they have had manpower cut backs. State Constables (volunteers) are helping out now and the time has decreased some. The long lag time is from getting the info back from the FBI.

Man yall have a lot of requirements for your permits. Here in SD we just have to fill out an application, pay 10 bucks, and wait a week or two.
