I have a 2nd generation Colt navy 1851 it is a genuine Colt brand. my problem is that the cylinder hangs in the same spot every time it rotates to a particular position then he hammer wont cock if I advance it by hand it will rotate thru 5 chambers and hang on the same one. with the cylinder out it works perfectly so its not the gizmo that comes out of the frame and rotates the cylinder itself I feel like its the litle slots on the back of the cylinder but im not sure can anyone help me? also the little slot things on the hammer end of cylinder all look the same there is no tooth broken off or anything but I believe its the problem can I touch it up with a dremmel tool without ruining it?

I wouldn't alter it if there's a chance that another part could be causing the binding.

The old adage says to "first alter the part that's the cheapest to replace".

here are the photos and all the teeth are intact and appear the same the cylinder hangs on the same spot every time that leads me to believe its the cylinder thats the problem

I can put that certain spot on teeth 3 clicks from hammer 3rd click hangs I can put it 2 clicks away same thing 2 clicks it hangs I can put it 5 clicks from hammer 5th click hangs I thought maybe some one fixed it to keep one chamber unloaded but that really makes no sense

Could that one tooth have some angle to it tha pushed the hand to the side?
Maybe that tooth didn't get trimmed back enough causing the hand to contact too soon
See what you can do to check the symmetry of that tooth to the others.
Have you tried another cylinder?

Put a dot of white on the tooth before it. Cock the hammer to get white on the hand. Cock again so the hand puts white on that tooth and look at it. Then do the same on 2 teeth that work and compare where the hand contacts.

Before you mess with the ratchet teeth, Check the cylinder forcing cone clearance! If you have not fixed the short arbor and the wedge is pushed in a little to far, The cylinder face could be draging on the forcing cone. Tap the wedge out a little and try it again and etc. Also a rough place on cylinder face could do that.

it turns out the cylinder at the chamber that hung was pressing to tightly against the cam that turns the cylinder and it was jamming into the cylinder before engaging the tooth notch that advances the cylinder I pulled the cylinder away from the hammer part of the frame and towards the forcing cone and it worked so I did that thru a couple of rotations and it must have smoothed out a rough spot on teeth but its rotating thru all 6 chambers now. thanks for the quick responses to my problem I appreciate it. I live in the fort worth Texas area and sure would like to meet other black powder shooters in my area if there are any.
