Okay, here goes,,,
Range report on my new CZ 512 Carbine.

160408-ValentinaBoxed.jpg

Short Report:

I love my new carbine.

Long Report:

When I got to the range the crosswind was blowing about 25 mph,,,
I didn't bother with setting out any paper targets,,,
I just tossed out some clays at 25yards.

It was also very overcast,,,
But the red fiber optic front sight was easy to see.

The rifle shipped with one polymer 10 round magazine,,,
But as advertised the 5 round metal 452 mag fit and worked well.

Since precision shooting was out of the question,,,
I decided to see what ammo she likes.

Since I had a 10 & 5 round mags,,,
I fired 30 rounds each of these brands.

The last mag was the 10 rounder,,,
I fired as fast as I could pull the trigger

  • Fiocchi standard velocity LRN
  • Federal American Eagle HP
  • Federal bulk pack (Wal Mart)
  • Federal Auto Match LRN
  • Remington Golden Bullet
  • Remington Mil Surp LRN
  • CCI standard velocity LRN
  • CCI Mini Mag LRN
  • CCI Mini Mag HP

There was not one failure to feed, fire, or eject,,,
270 perfect trigger pulls with the final 10 round mag in rapid fire.

I don't think she's ammo picky at all.

Now about that trigger,,,
I was a tad apprehensive about that.

I've read bad reviews of the 512 trigger,,,
I've also read that CZ fixed this in the carbine.

The first thing I noticed was a very short travel,,,
I don't think the tip of the trigger is moving even 1/8 inch.

I don't really have the terminology to evaluate a trigger,,,
I have no idea what terms like "creep" mean.

What I can tell you is that after just a few pulls,,,
I could anticipate when it would fire,,,
And the pull seems very light.

I'm going to say the trigger has the,,,
aarondhgraham Stamp of Approval. :bthumb:

The rifle has a good heft to it,,,
More than you would expect as it's only 5.12 lbs.

I think it was a good decision on CZ's part,,,
To go with dyed wood rather than a polymer stock.

Aesthetic wise,,,
It could be blacker,,,
It's actually a very dark gray,,,
You can see a little bit of the wood grain.

I wonder what black shoe wax would do to it?

It's so short though that I believe a sling (ala Appleseed) would help,,,
I did notice I had a tendency to wander around the target,,,
But let's not forget that danged crosswind.

I had placed 20 clay pigeons at 25 yards,,,
I hit 19 of them on the first shot.

I know that's nothing to brag about,,,
But I'm old and a bit shaky,,,
And don't forget the wind.

I love the red fiber optic front sight blade,,,
And the rear sight is as nice as the one on my 452 Trainer.

Military style slide for marked elevation steps,,,
Small screw for windage adjustments.

There is one minor detail in it operation I wish were different,,,
You have to count your shots as it does not hold the bolt open on an empty mag.

One could assume that pulling the trigger on an empty chamber is okay,,,
The manual says you may "dry fire" the gun after you unload it.

That's probably okay for unloading
But I don't think I would do it for trigger practice

The slide stop button is in the trigger guard in front of the trigger,,,
That's a bit odd in my opinion but not necessarily bad,,,
It will just take some getting used to is all.

I did have to chuckle at one thing,,,
There was one other person at the range,,,
He said it was a "...very nicely built Ruger 10/22".

Anyways, It's still very windy today,,,
So I think I'll save my ammo and wait for a calmer day.

I want to see how she performs off of my el-cheapo MTM rest at 50 & 100 yards.

So there it is,,,
My first outing with Valentina.

Valentina Binevska was a Czech sniper during WW-II

Let me reiterate,,,
I Love my new Carbine!

I'm wavering on whether to scope her or not.

I'm wavering on whether to scope her or not,,,
On one hand I'm old with old eyes,,,
A scope will always benefit me.

On the other hand,,,
I might keep her with iron sights only.

I did locate some 11mm see through mounts on Amazon,,,
They are only $10-something so I'll order them,,,
Just to have on hand in case I do scope her.

It's just that her iron sights are so danged nice,,,
It would be a shame to just waste them.

But to answer your original question,,,
If I do scope her I'll not spend too much money.

I've been very happy with a 4X Cabela's branded scope I own,,,
They also make a 2-7x32 that would probably do the trick.

I'm not a long range precision shooter/hunter,,,
High dollar optics are wasted on me.

Sounds like you've got a nice little carbine there with your CZ512. I had the same thought with my Ruger 10/22: it was so accurate with the iron sights (especially with that gold bead front sight), do I really want to mess around with a scope. Finally I decided to put a scope on just because it was so accurate right out of the box I wanted to see how much better it would be with a little magnification on target. Found an old Weaver K2.5 that was just the ticket. Have been very happy (along with finding that my rifle has a definite preference for Wolf Match Target and CCI MiniMags), with the results for quite a few years now.

Very nice, sir! Did it come with the plastic tuning fork disassembly tool? That threw me off the first time I tore mine down. That looks great and it looks like you had a blast, awesome!

Congrats enjoy it is a beatiful carbine. CZ gave us such a nice incentive to support the 2A (that was the better excuse I made up in long time to buy another firearm). THR 43 rule in the chapter 9 said that a follow up with target pictures and or another shooting time at the range will be due soon.

Hello armoredman & czhen,,,

Did it come with the plastic tuning fork disassembly tool?

Yes, it did come with that tuning fork tool,,,
I haven't broken it down as yet,,,
But it will need it soon.

THR 43 rule in the chapter 9 said that a follow up with target pictures and or another shooting time at the range will be due soon.

The rifle and ammo are in my trunk right now,,,
If the wind dies down here in Okie-Land,,,
I'll have target pics right after work.
