cz 75D compact vs. P01

An old acquaintance who used to be the head gunsmith at an aftermarket Glock business I won't name saw all sorts of chewed up, bent, busted, and shaved guide rods come in with pistols sent for work.

I saw one break at work one night during an inspection when a fellow officer was re-assembling his.

It's a concern for a lot of folks -- i.e., plastic just can't be good. But, while I've seen chewed up and broken Glock guide rods, I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a Glock malfunctioning because of a guide rod break.

Guide rods are NOT a high stress part (except in the mind of some owners, where they create high stress <grin>), as a guide rod really doesn't do much. That may explain why Glock's continue to run even with a broken guide rod. (For most semi-autos, they seem of greatest utility when field-stripping and reassembling the weapon -- as once the slide has moved just a bit, it's fully supported by the gun's dust cover, etc.

The CZ guide rod is softer than most (and, of course, with the compact modesls, the guide rods are all full-length, unlike most of the larger ones), and it bends a bit when used.

If you'll look at the compact CZs, you'll see the plastic guide rods curve with use and I always wanted to know, "why the curve -- what's causing that." I don't think that plastic is curving on it's own.

In the case I mention, the pistol could not be either re-assembled or disassembled & had to be taken out of service that night till the department armorer could get to it the next day.

Plastic does work, at least to a degree that makes it reliable enough for general sales, obviously, but... :)

It's not there because it's the "best" way to go, it's there because it's the cheapest way to go while still maintaining an acceptable performance rating.

Quite often a maker's definition of "acceptable" differs from mine. :)
If I end up keeping the 75D here, and it's looking like I probably will, the plastic guide rod will go & the trigger will be cleaned up for certain, and the mag floorplates will probably be replaced.
My only three fixable concerns with the pistol.

The narrow slide top riding inside the frame rails instead of outside it mildly impairs quick slide manipulation, but there's nothing that can really be done about that.
