So, ahhh, how bad would this thing be as a carry piece? Anyone used one as a carry piece before? What is the reliability like on these things? Would soft points be good SD ammo? What type of leather do you use?

Thanks.

Although I really like my CZ52's, I think of them as more as novelty items than a real defensive choice (maybe it would be good for the Governator). They are large, fairly heavy, and not the most ergonomic design around. Not quite as large, clunky or unwieldy as say a Desert Eagle but falls into the same class of impractical/novelty hand cannons. Stock sights provide a poor sight picture and the pyrotechnic and blast display, with or without porting, would be distracting (unless of course you are the Governator). However, if you reload, ammo selection wouldn't be a problem. I have loaded up the .22 sabots and Hornady XTP's for S&G's.

The above issues aside, the pistol must be carried cocked and locked (which is no big deal in of itself) but I don't believe they have any form of firing pin safety (or at least one that I would trust). Also, some have a tendency to fire when decocked. Do the pencil test to find out if yours does but don't even trust that. One of mine passed the other failed.

Since you have a Mak, you might want to consider putting some Novak's on it - like this.

not to mention that extra care must be taken to ensure its properly lubed. a malfunction with a cz52 due to inadequate lubrication is tough to clear.

i'd want to chrono the cz52 and test it out on some bal. gelatin before judging how good of a carry piece it is. my prediction is that it has too much penetration to be advisable for use on humans.

Mkay. I was just wanting to get one soon, because I like that little cartridge, but it looks like it won't replace my Mak yet as my (when I turn 21 :p) carry piece.

I figured it would be too big, but to be honest I haven't handled one and therefore don't really have a feel for how big.

Would the 9mm conversion make it a bit more desirable, or does that just add more problems to the mix?

No. The Tokarov round is about as good as a 10mm when it comes to penetration and energy. Way more impressive than the 9mm para.

I think you will find that the main disadvantage of the CZ52 is the large size and the single stack mag. If you can carry the gun, use it effectively, and make sure that it is reliable, then more power to you.
