Hello there, I hope I have come to the right place with my question. I have searched online other forums and such but couldn't find a satisfying answer about my delima.

I have a CZ550 FS chambered in .270 with iron sights and the 19mm dovetail scope base. I WANT to use both the iron sights AND scope on this rifle like my friend uses on his Marlin 30/30, but from what I've read you need to keep the scope low on this rifle and that EVERY SINGLE "19mm dovetail see-through scope rings" are labeled for rimfire use only... :( I have seen that Ceska Zbrojovka makes an "Un-restricted" sight specifically for the CZ550 and I have asked if their rings will keep the scope zero'd after continuous fire without remounting but have not heard back.

^^ The way these attach looks like every other 19mm dove tail though...

So, does anyone know of an "Over/under" 19mm scope ring set up that will withstand centerfire rifles? Or, can someone custom weld a locking tab onto a pair of existing rings? Or am I just up a creek here?

You do not want see through mounts on ANY rifle. They are awful. Instead of being able to use both optics and irons they make it almost impossible to use either effectively.

My advice is buy a quality scope that you trust and just forget about iron sights. In 40+ years of hunting I've never had a quality scope fail. I have had iron sights let me down. Even the few rifles I own that came with iron sights have had them removed. They just catch on brush and get in the way.

But if you insist on using iron sights as a back up there are many quick detachable mounts made that can be removed without tools. Most any Weaver style mount will come off fairly fast with just a screwdriver. Most will return and be close enough to zero for most hunting purposes.

I'm relativley new to hunting and am having to teach myself as I go. I'll invest in some good scope rings for this rifle, hopefully I'll be giving it to my kids one day. Kinda bummed I won't be able to use both sights at the same time but so it goes. Thank you for the info. :)

A couple of things. I've used see through scope mounts and they weren't "awful." A solution I prefer though are quick detach scope rings. I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott on which I have Talley quick detach rings. In those uncommon circumstances when iron sights are better, they're easily available.

Nice choice on the rifle. I have a CZ 452 FS that I love and had a CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55 that I wish I still had.

I agree about using quick detach rings. I have Warne QD rings on a few of my rifles and they work great.

The low power scope is also a good suggestion, though I would caution you to try it out first. Some find it distracting to view the front sight in the scope. I have a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20 on one of my rifles. I have gotten used to seeing the front sight in the scope at the lower powers and not focusing on it, but it took a bit of getting used to.

Not to derail a thread but, buy a good lever gun and get the over/under rings and have fun. That's what I got and I love them. All my bolt guns have scopes but no irons.

I have always used scopes and have only wished for irons in heavy rain/blizzard's. Any scope cover needs a moment to remove/open. The irons are "self cleaning" and always ready.

Add another vote for not to bother with the "see-thru" scope bases. I had a set on a 10/22 for about, oh 2 hours. After trying to shoot with them in place I couldn't get them far enough away from my guns. A set of solid, low-mount rings set everything up nicely.

Also, as I recall from handling a 550FS, they are stocked with quite a bit of drop. It felt great and 100% at home with the irons, so I'd imagine you'll want a small scope on the lowest rings that work for you.

The only way I've found that seems to work to keep an optic and irons both ready is a cowitnessed red dot sight. Though this only works because the red dot doesn't magnify your target.

^ +1 on Talley QD rings. They are your best bet other than getting a high end QD mount from Bobro Engineering.

if you don't see the exact mount on above link, call their number and Mr. Andrew Bobro will fabricate you something from scratch if necessary. Yeah it's over 200 bucks for Bobro mounts, but they make LaRue Tactical look like a prize from Cracker Jack box. YMMV Good luck!

I agree with this. I have a 2-7x32mm on my CZ 527 Carbine. At 2X magnification, I found that I quickly got acclimated to having a faint/blurry image of just the upper part of the front iron sight protective hood in the lower part of the scope's field of view.

I run a Swarovski 1.5x6 Professional Hunter in Warne QD 30mm rings on my 550 safari 416 Rigby. They work well. The scope does have a huge field of view at 1.5x and you can see the front sight but it's never been a problem for me.

I'd go with this solution myself
