Dachshund kills Raccoon.....

Went to town this morning to run some errands. When we got back, discovered that our Dachshund had caught and killed a Raccoon.

By the time we found it, she had pulled all the guts out of it!

Basically, they're hunting dogs. Some are aggressively tough little critters.

I'm also assuming your dog is up to date on its rabies shots. If not, better get started.

I understand they were bread for badger hunting, that's hard to believe because mine sleeps about 22 hrs a day. When he younger he was feisty though.

Still a coon, I wouldn't have thought a coon would have lost that fight.

Feeling a little 'giddy' last night, I guess.

Your post was 'spot on'. Dachshunds tend to have a strong hunting instinct and their compact size causes some to think them not 'capable' of a good tussle, but you would be wrong in most cases.

Just the same, a serious fight between a 'standard' Doxie and a full grown Raccoon, would have me betting on the Coon.

My apologies for 'baiting' each of you in, for the sake of a little humor (or lack thereof).

I would be concerned that the raccoon was infected with distemper. Fairly common in raccoons in early spring.

I hope that the dog is up to date on vaccinations. I would recommend that the remains of the raccoon are disposed of properly. Be careful.

The stated warnings regarding possibly a sick coon make a lot of sense.
OTH knew a fellow who raised wire haired doxies that were straight out varmint busters,my Airedales will make short work of possum coon and their brethern but they are medium sized dogs.
I tend to believe the axiom "it's not how big the dog is in the fight, but big the fight is in the dog."

That is an impressive CAT, especially for East Texas. Tough one too. Looks like he took two rounds, despite the excellent shot placement.

Our Dachshund does get outside regularly, but I don't think she is quite ready to tackle anything like that!

Nonetheless, for a 2 year old.....she has done OK for herself:

These "low to the ground" beasts are holy terrors and we're damn lucky they aren't 85 pounds... yet.

Coons will often hose themselves in a canine conflict by rearing up in an attempt to frighten an aggressor... Big mistake when that aggressor is a dog like the OP's or Rat Terrier, etc..

Oddly, smaller dogs have a natural advantage in dealing with coons. Anyone who's seen a coon tear the bejeepers outa a larger hound knows the score.

Mostly because he thinks he is ten feet tall and bulletproof.

Chases deer too, hasn't caught one yet...

At the agency where I worked we had a Jack Russell that was a therapy dog and a really good one. But, when he went home for the night he turned into a barn rat's worst nightmare. He would go on his daily patrol and kill every rat he found. His owners had a party for him when he had killed his 100th rat. I've never seen a dog that walked with such a bad-ass swagger.

Wieners vs Raccoon?

I've had seven dachshunds in 50 years. Still have two.
When I was a boy we had a pet raccoon, captured in the wild, licensed as a pet, and died of old age at 35 pounds.

That raccoon could kill and eat both of my wiener dogs in a minute! Your dachshund must have a CPL!

Our neighbor had a female mini Dachshund that didn't weigh 10 lbs. It caught a coon under their house and killed it in short order. They were bred to go down badger holes and bring them out. They fear nothing.

Flint, your dog looks very similar to two my grandmother used to have; she had two brothers, Max and Moritz, we called them "The Bath Mats" from the fuzz on their sides. Moritz saw 13 years, and Max lived deaf dumb and blind for 21 (human) years. They, and their predecessors, loved to go down rabbit holes and come home absolutely filthy (with dead rabbits).

Thanks for the laugh! I love that breed. I'm on my second one now, I've had her about a year. My first one killed a half grown possum on our patio for raiding the food bowl. I heard the commotion and got to see the end of the fight. They can mount a savage attack when provoked. I dare say that if they weighed a 100lbs, you'd never read a headline about a pit bull!...lol.
