Thought some of ya'll might get a kick out of this, interesting morning.
Went out again this am, beautiful day, eased canoe into back waters at 0530, stunning sunrise, a 10" fish jumped into my boat, hard to catch him in the dark, beavers kept slapping their tails at me, creek was thankfully high enough for me to get into the backwaters, I unloaded, set up on an island with back to creek and front to mud flat, 25' up in tree, about 9:00 a doe with spotted fawn came down creek bed to my back and passed, fifteen minutes later two large does crossed directly in front of me, clear shot, I hit the first one dead in the shoulder, she spun 360' then both crashed back into the underbrush. I heard thrashing, ect. I eased down tree carefuly, unhooked safety strap, pulled off a couple of layers of clothes, reloaded crossbow and went after them. No blood, brush was over head high and thick, I kept looking, going round in circles, couldn't see six feet, got on a deer trail that was tunneling under the growth, hit a curve and when I stepped around I was nose to nose with a large 6 point buck. He blew his lungs and jumped toward me, I fell back to the side as he went by, caught my balance, stepped up to see where he went and another one nearly ran over me, didn't have enough time to count his rack cause another deer was following him. They looped around through the undergrowth and jumped into the main channel, swam to another island. Crossbow was useless in that thick stuff, all I had was a hunting knife in my boot. I went back to canoe, smoked a cigar, had some coffee, got my nerve up and went back looking for the wounded deer. Kicked up one more in the underbrush but was about fifteen yards away. Never found the deer. First one I ever lost. Damn I hate that. Going to wait a week or so before I go back. In all I saw seven large deer on an island the size of four football fields. This is wildlife management area, bow only, it gets exciting. Is twenty minutes from home.

Although some people will tell you otherwise, the reality is that if you hunt long enough, you'll lose a big game animal sooner or later. It's no fun.

By the description of your shot; 'dead on in the shoulder', I'm willing to be you've got a dead deer out in the brush. If it were me, I'd keep looking -- if not to salvage any meat, at least to ease my mind.

Good luck & good hunting.

Man, that is exciting; thanks for sharing. Hard to believe they came toward you aggressively, rather than turning tail. Damn, sorry you lost that doe. :cuss:

interesting story, Sounds like a great setup and close to the house
good luck

Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. I don't think it was as much an attack as much as I was in the way. If there was intent to harm he had me. Or the second one. The trail was the only way to go. I just happened to be on it. Its a great set up but requires 40 minutes of paddling a canoe plus another 30 minutes to cross some nasty areas dragging the climbing stand and other stuff. If the water is up its real easy to float in on the back side of the island. If not then its a real pain. With low water I have to pull the canoe (Oldtown 14' guide) across a 15' mud flat and up a 4' bank to hide it in the woods.

Sounds like an interesting morning.

Question, how long did you wait after the shot to track the doe? I like to give them 30 minutes when using a bow and arrow.

Had a buddy out rifle hunting black tail deer in Washington and had to use his 30-30 in self defense. Was walking up a trail to his stand just at sun up when he came face to face with an 8 point buck. The deer lowered his head and charged. Tom got off 1 shot that hit the deer in the backbone and dropped him about 3 feet from his position. Took him about 30 minutes to quit shaking.

Didn't wait long enough. But these were not the deer I shot. I just stumbled on them looking for the other. Next time I'll give it a full thirty minutes. This one had his head down low too. I was able to step back as he went by.

I did the same thing. Only waited about 10 minutes and when I went to recover I kicked her up not more than 30 yds from the shot. She ran into a swamp and I never found her after that.

For that reason I always wait at least 30 minutes. Hard to do it but its worth the wait.

Shoot, I wait 20 or 30 minutes with a rifle. If / when I ever get a deer with a bow, I will wait at least 45 minutes to 1 hr (unless I hear it crash or KNOW that I have a heart/lung shot; then 20-30 minutes).

here are a couple of photos of the area:

The island is on the left, I'm in the main channel, the view is into a side creek which runs between the islands

This is further into the backwaters

I was set up on the left, deer cross from island on right to the left then go down edge of backwaters

This is a view of the open backwaters, inaccessible except by canoe of kayak. They use the islands for crossing to keep out of the open areas. Water here is about one foot deep. The treeline on the left is about 100 yds wide and borders the Tennessee river. The trees on the right are Wheeler Wildlife refuge.

Beautiful area, but it looks like a wounded panicky deer could fall under water and never be found.

I was a "guide" for deer hunts at Ft Hood, TX in the early 1980s. We had a hunter out who shot once, but when questioned claimed he did not shoot at all. The other guide and I only had time to glance around before it was dark and we had to haul the hunters back to the check station. The next week we went out and within a few minutes found the remains of a nice buck. The coyotes had gotten to him, but the hunter had hit him. One of his shoulders was shattered. We salvaged the rack as that would have been a shame to leave to rot and get ate up by the mice that winter.

After that I made sure we always did a very thorough search. Found a doe that way one time. Guy admitted he shot, but could not find her. We did and salvaged some good meat.
