Three days ago I was Daniel Booning it on a 30 acre island surrounded by mudflats. Kept the wind right, did the ten steps take a knee count to thirty routine, in an open pine section had a very nice 6 pointer cross from my left to angle away from me. He was built like a tank. Time was 3:00pm. Probably about thirty yards away, never had a good shot, he never saw me. I eased on up, found a trail on a bottleneck that goes from one part of the island to another. I went back yesterday morning, set up in climbing stand at daybreak, stayed four hours, no sign. Going back in an hour, will stay till dark. The shot will be through open pines, I'll be about thirty feet up. This will have to be a one shot kill. Forty yards on either side are mudflats. If he gets in them no way I could get him out. I'll have a clear shot at maximum 50 yards. My gun options are a Marlin 30-30 with a 3X9 Millet scope, 150g soft nose, M1 Garand 150g softnose, Springfield 03 or 03A3 150g softnose or a Mod 39 VKT with 180g Lapua softnose, Colt AR15 Govt Model 6550 series with 55g sps. All are sighted in with acceptable groups at 100 yds. I'll have to use a canoe to get up the creek to get close to the island, then wade a
25 yd backwater dragging the canoe with climbing stand, gear and rifle. Once on bank I'll have about a three hundred yard trip across island with stand, gun, and gear to hunting area. Weight is a factor. What would you take?

Good to hear from you! I'll be in the backwaters off Cotaco creek. Want to go along sometimes this week?

Didn't get to go - son in USAF came in from South Carolina, send me an IM with phone # and we'll link up next week. Have some warm clothes and boots for mud.

My step-son's home on leave, too. Just got back from Iraq, and is going back to Germany once his leave is over. Will be spending a year there, then has a possible redeployment to the great litter box.
