It's almost certainly a model 15-2 in 357 magnum with the barrel shroud replaced. They're excellent guns but you do want to check over it very carefully before you shoot it. Ask your friendly neighborhood revolver guy or gunsmith if you're not confident.

You should definitely check the cylinder gap before firing, as others have mentioned. Harbor freight has a set of feeler gauges for cheap.

If you want to save some money on the barrel wrench, you can use this:

However it does not fit as well as the real thing. You'll have to use the smallest inserts at the tightest setting on the tool and go SLOW to get some good tension. If you aren't hurting for money or you think you'll have the gun for a long time, go ahead and get EWK's tool. As others have said, Eric is a good guy. Too bad he's not making the barrel/shroud combos any more. I really wanted one of the extra-heavy barrels for mine.

Note: I have never personally tried a .22 shroud on mine. I see no reason it would cause a problem as long as it retains the barrel properly but do your own research first.

Dan Wesson cannot help with dating that gun from the S/N, but The Dan Wesson Forum can.

That is a Model 15-2 made in 1979, and as already observed it has a .22 lr shroud mounted, very easy to do and completely safe. The 15-2 is chambered in .357 Magnum.

esoteria i wasn't aware that eric stopped making his shrouds, always before he had limited runs and made everything in a loop so if you missed one selling it might be a year before you got another chance. I wouldn't think he would quit making them forever but you never know i guess.

Well, it used to be he had them on the site and you could request to be notified when they're back in stock (which I did of course), but now they're not there at all. I e-mailed him last Fall and he sounded like he might still do it but didn't have any definite plans. Tried again in January but didn't get anything back.

Y'all have got me to thinking it would be downright offensive if I posted how I removed & reinstalled the barrel nut on my old Dan Wesson without the wrench like EWK sells.

I don't know what is going on with EWK selling barrels & shrouds but I wanted a 6" barrel & shroud for my old model 15-2. I signed up to be notified when he did a run & never received an E-mail. That was probably a year ago or more.

To the OP there is a ton of information about these guns at www.danwessonforum.com These are very accurate guns. Sadly I messed up. My wife was complaining about shooting her little Taurus snubnosed .38 so I said here try this & handed her my model 15-2 loaded with .38s. She said this is a lot nicer & has held onto it ever since. I guess I'm going to have to buy her another gun to get it back though I may just use this as an excuse to buy a revolver in a larger caliber.

Just to help folks understand, EWK is a sideline business for Eric. His business is a NOT BIG tool and die/machine shop, and the firearms accessories don't come close to paying the bills.

When he has the opportunity he designs and produces specialty accessories for DW revolvers as well as for other selected firearms.

His most recent DW product is a very well designed and produced muzzle brake for both small and large frame DW revolvers, blued and stainless. Pretty much everything he produces is done in batches in anticipation of eventually selling them, but he does not maintain a large on hand inventory.

I have worked with him in the past on the development of one of his DW products, he is a craftsman, not a manufacturer.

The Plastic tool is common.

You can pull the metal ring that is striped out. Fill the groove it sits in with super glue. Drive the metal ring back in, let is sit overnight and it will most likely work. I have done this to several of them.
