2 Injured When Gun Fires At Central Fla. Home

POSTED: 9:05 am EST February 20, 2006
UPDATED: 1:27 pm EST February 20, 2006

Two men handling a 9mm handgun in a darkened room were seriously injured Monday when the weapon went off in a Palm Bay home, police told Local 6 News partner Florida Today.

The accidental shooting happened about 4 a.m. along the 2200 block of Washington Street. Police said Alphonso Jacobs, 23, had arrived at 19-year-old Stephen Terry's home for an unexpected visit, officials said.

"They were handling a gun and fired a round. The round traveled through the hand of one person and hit the neck of the other one," said Capt. Alan Abner, a watch commander for the Palm Bay Police Department.

Investigators said Jacob's fingers were severely injured.

"His hand injury was significant because it was shot point blank. They were concerned about him losing some of his fingers," said Yvonne Martinez, spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department.

"They said they didn't see the handgun. When Jacobs came in, it was dark and they went to the back bedroom," Martinez said.

Martinez said police were also looking into Jacobs' whereabouts just prior to the shooting.

Both were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne and were in stable condition, officials said.

Anybody want to bet against this?

Either coming back from, or preparing to go to, a robbery or a drive-by.

Or they were performing their own strange version of "Brokeback Mountain". (If so, I don't want to know more <<shudder>>.)

This whole affair occured at 4:00 am. My rule of thumb is, if it is after 2:00 am, it is betting odds that it is either illegal or immoral (that it is stupid goes without saying;) ).

Another general guideline: "Young men" plus "unexpected visit around 4:00 am" is likely to add up to "had a few." This is not conducive to good gun-handling.

Note to reporters: guns do not "just go off!" Safety. Trigger. Blam!

I like this line too:

Martinez said police were also looking into Jacobs' whereabouts just prior to the shooting.

Yup, probably 'going to the videotape' right now!

I'd take that bet if it were legal for me to do so.:D

Occam's Razor: two young, uneducated men who want to run their paws over the tacticool bangstick.

No one taught them how, thus tragedy ensues. Never confuse evil with stupid.:D
But the article said they didn't see the gun. So it must have jumped up and attacked them, at point-blank range, because they failed to properly enunciate the password upon entering the darkened room.

Good watchgun. You get an extra biscuit.

Looks to me like the policeman got it right.
They were handling a gun and fired a round
But of course, the media didn't.
They might as well wrote "Two men attacked by handgun."
