Good catch John.

I won't be going personally for that reason, but I do find it well that a 2nd amendment symposium is happening at a university, any university (not to mention with the NRA and created by students).

I wish them well.

Chris

My guess is that the organization Law Students for the 2nd Amendment aren't big fans of the GMU weapons ban. The fact that they're able to hold this symposium at all makes it worth supporting. Refusing to go simply because of a university policy seems kind of petty. One would imagine that the topic might even be brought up during the discussion or in a Q&A session.

A little about Law Students for the Second Amendment

(bump!)

Thank you, High Road mods, for allowing the cross-post from Reason; I appreciate the support!

Law Students for the Second Amendment (LS2A) is a wholly student-run organization at the George Mason University School of Law (GMUSL) dedicated to the preservation of the Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms as drafted in the Bill of Rights. We are a strong and active group at the law school, and enjoy open support from faculty members and national lobbying organizations*

We arrange symposia, conferences, lectures, firearms training, and range outings for law students and professors, with the premise that unfamiliarity with firearms is a font of contempt and misunderstanding. Last semester (Spring 2005) we taught 23 law students who had never touched a firearm before to put rounds downrange safely. All 23 said that they had a new understanding and appreciation of firearms; all 23 will soon be practicing attorneys. This semester we hope to familiarize even more students, and provide lots of range and field time for our more experienced shooters.

LS2A is working to organize grassroots support from the student body to change the University’s policy forbidding the carrying of firearms on campus; again we have received wide support on the matter from both students and faculty.

I hope that the membership of The High Road will consider attending the Symposium if possible, or at least spread the word if unable to attend.

Please visit the nra-ila website and scroll to the bottom for more information about the symposium. I’ll be glad to answer any questions here on the forum.

Thank you, and thanks again to The High Road for an excellent forum.

Sincerely,
Eric Swartz (jingolaw)
President, Law Students for the Second Amendment
