D.C. Mayor, Police Chief Announce New Anti-Gun Plan

D.C. Mayor, Police Chief Announce New Anti-Gun Plan

By Allison Klein

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) and Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced several new initiatives today aimed at combating gun crimes, including one encouraging residents to submit to voluntary searches of their homes in exchange for amnesty if the residents have illegal guns or drugs.

The "safe homes initiative" is aimed at residents, such as parents or guardians who know or suspect their children have guns in their home, who want to cooperate with police, Lanier said.

"If we come across illegal contraband, we will confiscate it," Lanier said. "But amnesty means amnesty. We're trying to get guns and drugs off the street."

All seized guns will be tested to see whether they have been used in criminal activity. If they have, police may initiate a criminal investigation, Lanier said.

The program will begin March 24 in the Washington Highlands area of Southeast Washington, where officers will go door to door asking residents for permission to search their homes. It will then expand to other areas of the city.

In addition to the safe homes initiative, D.C. police are starting to hold monthly meetings with law enforcement partners to identify trends in gun-related crimes.

"We are not satisfied with the number of guns on the streets of the District of Columbia," Fenty said.

Next week, the Supreme Court is set to examine the District's ban on handguns.

Notice the talking out of both sides of the mouth....
"amnesty means amnesty" but then in the next sentence..."If <any guns have been used in a crime>, police may initiate a criminal investigation". So much for amnesty.

All I can think of with this is
A) The exact same plan worked SO well in Boston a while back
B) Once you pay the Danegeld you never get rid of the Dane.

How long before the door to door searches are no longer voluntary

this disgusts me on so many levels

some kind of attempt at a pre-emptive strike against gun owners right before the heller case

some kind of attempt at a pre-emptive strike against gun owners right before the heller case

BINGO! The irony is that IF they ran this and people cooperated then they would just about kill themselves whipping up hype about every single firearm they found as an example of why they NEED their gun ban in DC and they would never ever be able to understand it as proof that the gun ban DOESN'T WORK against crime and/or criminals.

I would never live in the District of Communism, but if I did, and a cop came to my door asking for permission to search, I'd tell him to come back with a warrant, and until then, he can pound sand.

I thought they had a gun ban?

Why would they need such a "contraband" program if the ban actually worked?

"We are not satisfied with the number of guns on the streets of the District of Columbia," Fenty said.
WOW! For the first time ever, I actually agree with this idiot! He's right, we definitely need there to be more people on the streets legally carrying.:D

Yes, if you're afraid that your child will shoot you if you confront them, let us search your home! That way they won't blame you, and it will instantly fix your family!

Unless of course the gun that they obtained illegally was ever used in a crime, then it's possible that they will get stuck with it...

Im so sure criminals live in neighborhoods where cops want to just walk around in all day, and would happily invite them inside.

"I wonder how many people will be intimidated into allowing these "voluntary" searches? My guess is A LOT."

never been to dc i guess and i guarantee never to the highlands. the tourmobile doesn't go through there. the cops treated it like a demilitarized zone till the nation of islam cleaned it up for em some.if they bring news crews they might get a few who let em search just so they can be on tv. not a police friendly area. i bet neither fenty or the police chief go there after dark alone

I remember being taught as a wee child that it is illegal for an officer of the law to ignore or dispose of legally collected evidence?
finding an illegally owned firearm is a felony, how could the police promise to overlook such a high end felony crime, especially when they are on a crusade to stamp out all guns?

Seriously, look at the loop hole,,, go find out who has a gun, and then suddenly have a legal person say "uh mayor/chief its illegal to not prosecute these people for illegal possession of firearms". 5 minutes later, the swat boys go knockin in doors.

IF there were no underlying motive behind this I could see a reason for it. I know for a fact that there are parents who are afraid of their chldren. If a parent is that afraid of their child I can understand them wanting anything to get the police involved.

That said, I believe that this has a much more devious side to it. It has a goal of making these "searches" mandatory. It's one more way that the government is trying to get us all to give up our rights little by little. It's truly just another tactic to try to get the camel's nose under the tent. The damned leftists in our midst are going to use any tactic they can to turn us into a police state so they can force their ideology down our throats.

Maybe the DC mayor should volunteer his own house first as a show of good faith... and see if there is any contraband, like I dunno crack rocks, and hookers, and see where things go from there. If they force this program on the population, then let the first person it target be the head of the city, and then the city's finest (cops as well as all the congressmen in town), then youll see how long this lasts. But it will not go that far, just in the ghetto's where the media and hypocritical politicians will call it a raving success.

People in DC will actually allow these searches. I remember reading about a woman that found some sort of gangland-style sawed off rifle (complete with duct tape) in her son's dresser. She instantly contacted the cops and they came out to confiscate it. Can't remember the rest of the story unfortunately.

Many people in DC adore their government and trust them fully.

Desperation

Crime is out of control and they want to appear to be doing something.

Most people will allow voluntary searches because the police attitude will be if you are not volunteering you must have something to hide.

Those who stand up and say no will be noted. They probably will do a cross check for things like warrants, people on parole, etc.

Here is a question, are there devices that would allow them to quickly determine if gun powder or other components of ammunition are around.

I imagine that people who volunteer won't have heavy searches done, rather it will be the ones who get targeted after intially saying no.

Police tried this crap looking for pot a few years back in a remote Alaska town.

Wonder what the ACLU, ABA and NAACP think of the searches?

I'm not saying people will do this because they like the DC police, I'm saying they'll do it because they think they have no choice. If a cop shows up at their door and asks to search the home, I'm sure a lot of people will just assume it will happen with or without their consent. I think this will turn into police intimidation of uninformed people who don't know their rights.

in the highlands folks know their police rights. second graders can recite miranda from memory. its just another sign how clueless fenty is. both him and the new chief are completely outa touch

I like GlowInPontiac's idea of a no warant..no search sign, but as I have less than zero art skills.....

Maybe Mr. Volk or one of the other really talented folks here on THR can take this idea and run with it..

Something like a folded paper with "Search Warrant" boldly printed on it, and the famous 'red slashed zero' over it, along with a "Police-Type Uniformed Person" peering into say a dresser drawer or opened closet, along with another 'red slashed zero' over that.

That is what I first thought. What does this say about family values in DC? Are kids there so out of control parents have to call police? I also agree with

I don’t think the police will even mention that it is a voluntary search and will try to intimidate people to have a “harmless” look around. This is just bad all the way around. This is so underhanded that they can't even keep their story straight.
But amnesty means amnesty vs All seized guns will be tested to see whether they have been used in criminal activity. If they have, police may initiate a criminal investigation
