I was thinking about starting to do some leather work and remembered deer season is coming up.

Now I have never been hunting and would have no idea what precicly to do with a deer after I shot one. Also I would have no idea where to hunt a dear at aside from just walking into some random woods and hunting.

I also realy dont have any need for the meat (aside from maby jerky but I don't have any way to dehydrate it).

Largest thing I have to hunt with is my sks and agine I have no idea if this would be big enough to hunt dear with.

What kind of cost is there for hunting asuming I have no hunting licence and such?

1 After shooting a deer you have to gut it, tag it, and drag it out of the woods and take it to a checking station.

2 Those random woods belong to somebody, get written permission first or look for public hunting areas. Scout where you are going to hunt way ahead of time.

3 Maybe you have a hunters helping the hungry type organization in your area. Jerky can be made with an oven.

4 Ohio requires that you use a shotgun and slugs or a muzzleloader for deer.

5 Sky's the limit on what you can spend, Check the Ohio DNR web site for license cost and regulations.

You didn't bring it up but you need to find a hunting buddy. somebody with some experience will do you a world of good and you will enjoy the hunt much more with experience on your side.

You have to ask yourself at this late date why you want to go hunting at all? Everyone has different reasons - want the venison, just love being out there, hunting with buddies, card games half the night in hunting camp, etc. If you do have a particular reason, I would suggest you put off going this year and do a lot of planning for next year. This would include finding friends who are experienced and learn from them, scouting out areas where you can hunt, and then learning the movements of deer in those areas.
Some of the best friends are farmers and landowners. You help them out with work, such as cutting wood for the winter, during the spring and summer and they will welcome you to hunt on their property. After deer season, along towards spring as snow melts, looking for sheds is also an excellent way to learn the area where you plan to hunt. You also need to learn the laws of where you plan to hunt and equip yourself with the proper equipment. And that includes clothing. It can be pretty miserable out there if you are not dressed properly -- especially footgear.
If you just take a gun and wander into some area to hunt (provided it is either public land or you have permission), you are most likely not going to see anything but maybe tracks. Without scouting in the preseason and/or buddies who have done so, you can plan on just getting a lot of fresh air.
Been there and done that - many years ago.

Well like I said I was just after the dear for the experiance and the leather. I swore I saw some thing about using rifles to hunt on one of the sites I checked out.

If you do have to have a shot gun that rules me right out at this point.

The bureaucrats ruin a lot of things. The rules and regulations that govern hunting are an unfortunate outworking of the nanny state. Some rules are necessary to protect the resource for future generations, but the rules in most states are rediculously complex and one of the main barriers to entry for new hunters.

No shotty ...no hunty. You cannot use a rifle in Ohio, unless it's a muzzleloader. If you just want hides, talk to a local meat processor. They'll have tens of thousands of them at the end of the deer season. If you really want to hunt, sign up for the beginner hunting course offered by the Ohio DNR and try to find someone to take you. No offense intended, but there are far too many people heading out to the public hunting areas who don't have a clue what to do. That's dangerous for everyone...you included. Read up on the subject and take the class.

Alright well no hunting for me then sence I need a shot gun. That to me seems like a stupid rule but what do I know.

Yea all I need is one side of leather or a full skin to practis with. Not sure if there are any meat plants around here or at least I don't know of any.

Check with some local hunters to see where the closest processor is located. I'd bet they will be running ads in the local paper pretty soon as well. Any Amish close by? They'll sell you one cheap...maybe even give you one.

No rifles because of the range involved. On the one hand its annoying to have laws like that when common sense is all thats needed. On the other hand, there's a lot of idiots out there that think they need a 2 mile gun to take a deer from 50 yards and don't practice common sense. Always a trade off.
You are allowed to use handguns also. Has to be a straight walled cartridge, ..357 caliber or bigger, from a gun with a barrel 5" or longer. No muzzle loading handguns.
You can read up on all the regulations at: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/

At this point, you may not be able to get throught he safety course (required for first time license buyers) in time to get a license, which is required for hunting anywhere but your own land.

I agree with Atticus, if you just want the hide there are easier ways to get it.
