I recently purchased a hornady 9mm die set, after someone borrowed mine. Issue I am having is it is pulling the old primers back into the case partly reseating them. this is jamming up my XL650. I have tried changing the decapping pin also tried filing the end square. I have never had this issue before.

I have adjusted the decapping rod from where it doesn't push some primers out to it almost touches the bottom of the case. That was the suggestion from hornady.

I had the same problem with my RCBS die quite awhile back. The problem with mine was that the pin had worn down to the point that it was actually too thick on the end, just thick enough to wedge itself into the spent primer anvil. I thinned out the end of the pin with sandpaper to where it no longer hung onto the primer and it hasn’t happened since. ymmv

I had the same problem with a Hornady 9mm decapping die. I tried everything. New pin, filed pin, adjusting pin engagement. Finally broke down and picked up a Dillon set. That spring loaded decapping die is slick. Not one primer pulled back in over 3k of loaded rounds so far.

Somewhere on another forum there is a identical thread and that problem had to do with recent changes to CCI small primers.

I have that problem also with my Hornady progressive press. It seems to only be with 9mms in my case but I don't load 40 or 45 acp. Some of it is tight or crimped primer pockets where the primer cup is bending into a cone shape with the softer primers instead of holding it's form and punching out of there.
It's a real PITA.
I caught this with my Single Stage once and pulled the shell holder, case and all, out of the press. The primer looked like a "cone head" where the punch pin almost pushed clear through it and it still didn't come out.
Soft primers will do this but I use Winchester primers which are a little harder and don't have that problem with my own ammo. Range pick up is a real problem.
I have to almost bottom out the punch pin stem in the case to mitigate this with my 9mms. None of the other calibers I load for does this.
Screw the punch pin down to where it almost touches the bottom of the case and it should work.

Yes, they do. I have a universal decapping die with one of those. I wasn't aware I could buy them for my other dies. Or they are the same threads that will work in my other RCBS dies.

Don't use them with a rockchucker press, it will shoot primers all over your reloading room. They will hit you in the face and everywhere else. My Hornady progressive has a primer hose that leads to any container you want to put under it. This primer decapping die works very well for decapping 9mm. If you load all in one pass my universal die takes an extra space I don't have so I don't use it for that.
I do use it when I am decapping cases for the ultrasonic cleaner before I load them.
I would think Dillon also has an ejection port for spent primers.
I will have to look at these for my press with 9mm dies. They are very efficient in ejecting primers.

With the Hornady I polished the end of the pin and rounded the end and the problem went away. The universal deprimer by RCBS, springs are too weak to hold up under full load. I cut down a used spring out of my AR to correct the problem. Don't recall if I used a ejector spring or some other used gun spring I had laying around. It will launch the primer now. No longer have a problem with primers sticking to it. At one time I tried putting a pin inside RCBS spring to keep from over compressing it, did not work well. Replacing the spring with a heavier duty one did work.

I have had that happen. I modded the shape of the end of the pin and the primers stopped sticking on it and being brought back up jamming things up.

Dillon’s 9mm dies have a spring loaded decapping pin that shoots them off. For others “square” isn’t the shape that worked for me a smaller radius or even an angle worked better for me. The radius needs to be one that won’t get stuck in the anvil and if it’s at an angle they don’t seem to remain square enough to re-enter the pocket.

I’ve been looking for some replacement springs as well. I ordered another decapping pin assembly and plan on using it to figure out how I can just replace the spring. I also ordered a lee universal decapping die with an extra pin as well just so I’m not stuck dead in the water at 2:00 am when all the hardware stores are closed.

If I can find a replacement spring I’ll be sure to buy plenty and let everyone know what it ends up being or where to get one.

just like #14 - round off the end of the pin just a little and your problem will go away. Common problem and fix found in many other forums. Worked for me and I've run about 4k since then.

I've had moderate success with reshaping the Hornady pin using a (recently acquired) small diamond-grit file,,, (The emery cloth I was using before just wasn't working/took way too long)

My pin has sort of a 'truncated cone/round nose' profile now. Trial and error process, and I'm still in 'R + D',,,

I believe the Lee uni-decapper pin has a smaller diameter than others, and may be an explanation as to why they don't 'hang' on the anvils as bad.

Get a mighty armory decapping die and he sells multiple diameter pins. Its built like a tank. Ive never busted a pin.

I have a decapping die but don't have room for it on my xl650. I will try sanding down the pin some more.

So I just got a new RCBS HD decapping pin assembly and got all the specs on just the spring. Compared to my broken one. And ordered a quantity of 18 compression springs from a spring manufacturer.

When I get the new ones I’ll go ahead and install it in my “broken” pin assembly and I already have a special project for them. I’ve got over 2k of 223 that needs deprimed and 4K of 9mm that needs deprimed as well.

I’ll post the results of the spring whenever I get them in the mail, and have done the dirty work. If it all goes well and the experiment proves success I’ll let everyone know what the specs/cost/mfr is. And if it proves to be an utter disaster. Then I’ll just pretend this never happened...;)

FWIW:

1. RCBS website indicates the 'Pow'r Punch decapping pin' fits all RCBS pistol caliber dies.

2. Contacted RCBS and tried to purchase (20) OEM springs for the Pow'r Punch pin...

Wouldn't let me buy 'em,,,,

But,,,

They are sending me (5) replacements and told me when I get down to 1 or 2, call 'em and they'll send me more,,,

Certainly can't complain about that, but if a 'more robust' spring exists, I'd be willing to try it!

(I tend to think the spring rate is a balancing act between too soft a spring to 'flick' the primer off vs. too strong to compress the spring before the primer dislodges)
