I agree totally with "NavyLT"...

No matter how much trouble it is - arrange for her to try as many models as you can and then buy her whatever she likes. You will be rewarded forever for using that approach.

A Mossberg Plinkster for $90 buck NIB!

The Bolt-Action 802 actually has a pretty decent trigger for a $100 rifle...

I now have 3 of the 702 semi-autos from Dick's @ $79, I figured I'd stock up!!

+1 on the Browning .22 semi-auto takedown. Tubular magazine is easy to load, safety is positive, "knob" for cycling action is large and easy to operate even if you have small fingers. Also, even if you don't use the takedown feature for carrying it in a pack, it makes cleaning the barrel from the chamber end easy. Unfortunately, they are right around $500...

I read your second post, and I realize this isn't a bolt action. If you can find one, I suggest you let your wife handle it. They are amazingly light and point naturally. IMO, I wouldn't worry about semi auto being a problem with shooting discipline.

Thanks all for the info. In the end, I got a 10/22. So far, I am a bit underwhelmed - at least one malf per mag. Haven't had a chance to experiment with the amounts of lubrication, ammo kinds, etc to even begin to diagnose the problem yet though.

Thanks for posting. I was wondering what you ended up with but sorry to hear the 10/22 is generating a few problems.

As I'm sure others will point out in addition to getting through the break-in period trying different types of ammo could be a solution. Don't despair that the product is terminally flawed till you try a few other types of ammo and shoot it some more. If it were mine, I would also try cleaning the mags. I assume you're using factory mags. In my experience less lubrication on semis is better than too much.

I've owned more than one 10/22 over the years and while I'm not a great fan of the product others here that know and love the rifle may/will have useful suggestions. If you would care to check it out there are many helpful people over on rimfirecentral.com. Their 10/22 section is pretty active and you can try the "search" function here and on RFC to get some more ideas.

Take care and let us know how things work out.

My wife tried my scoped semiauto. Said it was all right, but not that interesting to shoot after a little while.

Then she tried my Marlin 39 lever gun with irons. She really loved it. I didn't get it back that day.:)

WRT the 10/22 I found the best solution to the problems I had with magazines, accuracy, and FTE/FTF. I sold the !@#$ thing.

IMO the Marlin 60 is a lot cheaper and has been a much better choice in an inexpensive semiauto. Shoots like the Ruger Target model even with the cheap stuff, feeds very reliably, doesn't have magazine issues, isn't picky about ammo, has proper stock geometry for a scope, and I paid $120 for mine brand new on sale.

I really prefer lever .22's but it's morally wrong not to have at least one semiauto .22 rifle.:)

Honestly, I'd probably go with a 10-22 and then after that I'd go with a Mosin-Nagat 91/30 with some upgrades to take some recoil. After that I do have a Barrett that i'm probably gonna put up for sale... (Model 99). Good luck

If you want a bolt, a used Anschutz would be a good option, though personally levers or semis are much fun to start with, bolts are for people who are stickles for precision.

Why does the Winchester Wildcat get no love?

Someone did mention the TOZ 78, so I guess that counts...sort of.

You just have t0 give the 10/22 some range time to get it to function reliably. Everything will loosen up over time. If you want to try your hand on some mods to impreove reliability and accuracy, head out to RFC and pick up some tips there for your 10/22.

I do now! At the time i posed #55 wasn't there.... Talk about being lazy and getting dragged to do other stuff!
ha ha
anyways good luck, let us know when you start to modify it.
