I know this answer is really about what I want to do, but I'm looking for opinions on if you all think it's a fair deal.

I have tried and tried to like 1911s for years, but it's something about the shape of my hands that make it difficult for me to shoot well. They are beautiful firearms and I respect them, but I think it may be time to move on.

I have my 2011 Colt Series 70 with Colt's custom shop work - tactical package and all MIM removed. I have been offered these three things in return (trade) for it:

(All brand new by the way)

1) SIG P226R 9MM FDE SIGLITE SRT SCORPION. I don't have a 226, and I want to keep on adding to my 9mm collection.

2) Smith and Wesson M&P45 w/ Manual Safety (109106). I like the M&P platform, and want to keep a .45 ACP in the mix.

3) Vortex StrikeFire Red Dot (red/green #SFRDAR15)

I know the Colt will hold it's value better long-term, but I don't shoot it. And it seems like this is a pretty good deal.......but I'm not positive.

Well regardless of how much you have into your Colt and how much the other three items are worth, to me the bottom line is if you're not getting enjoyment out of shooting your Colt then maybe it's time to move on to something else. In this case you have been offered two decent guns (both of which you seem relatively interested in), and a red dot sight. You could keep all three or sell/trade what you don't want for something you do want. I think you will still be money ahead if you make this trade.

Walkalong

The way I read it all three items; the two guns and the red dot sight, were in trade for his Colt.

I'm assuming this is a package deal. The Vortex red dot doesn't have enough value for consideration, the M&P is easily found and not very expensive and the manual safety versions are not very popular, so, IMO, it comes down to how bad you want a SIG 9mm. Personally, I'd keep the Colt or sell it outright and then buy something I want more.

Sell it and get what you want.

In a way, I am. But getting what these 3 items are worth - about $1600 after taxes - seems to me, to be about what I could sell it for outright. If I list it locally, I may get a couple hundred more, but 1911s like this ($$$) don't sell that quickly.

And if I send it to GB, I have to pay their fees.

I guess the unknown (to me) is what is the Sig really worth, and will it hold its value?

Not being a 1911 fan either, I think it's a good deal for all concerned. You get two nice pistols and a sight that I-have-no-idea-if-it's-worth-jack for a gun you don't like and appear to want to get rid of.

I think you're over-valuing (is that a word?) both your gun and the package. The scope is icing on the cake, no lasting value. As mentioned above, the M&P is a commodity in unpopular configuration. The Sig is hot for people who want to play soldier and have a tacticool gun for their desert ops (a thin and fickle market). Painted guns don't tend to hold value. My top dollar value of what you have been offered is about $1100. Your 1911 is worth less.

Unless you are itching for the Sig so bad it hurts (and know you'll keep it forever), I would sell your gun and get every dime you can out of it. Then take proceeds and buy what you want.

I think it's a fair trade if you like Sig 226 (I do) and the M&P (an excellent pistol IMO)... I know this is wrong to say but a Colt 1911 doesn't do it for me either. Frankly, I think either pistol offered for trade is a better platform than the 1911 regardless of name brand.
I did have to read the OP again to make sure all the items mentioned were offered for the pistol in trade.

45Badger.....I'm going to try and stay "High Road" with my answer, because I did ask for opinions - but you can not be serious.....can you?

Well, scopes aren't free, so it has value to me at this given time.

If you don't like the M&P, fine. But I want one with a manual safety. My choice.

The Sig is hot for people who want to play soldier and have a tacticool gun for their desert ops

I haven't played soldier since I was 7 or 8 years old. And I hate "tacticool". But, I do like the look of the Sig - and have always wanted a P226. I collect 9mm handguns, and do not have a 226.

My top dollar value of what you have been offered is about $1100.

Fantastic. You wouldn't give a penny over $1100 for a $900+ 226, a $500+ M&P or a $150 red dot.........I need to shop where you do.

My top dollar value of what you have been offered is about $1100. Your 1911 is worth less.

Well, you might be the only person I know who would say a LNIB Colt Series 70 with $1200+ of upgrades (and over a year wait) from Colt's custom shop is worth less than a new, stock Series 70. OK then......

I would sell your gun and get every dime you can out of it.

If it's not worth $1100, in your mind, what do you think I should get for it?

BTW, let me know if you have any firearms for sale......I want to be first in line.

Too me your trading a custom gun for three mediocre items that will loose value quicker than you can snap your fingers...

I agree, with the caveat being the Sig. I figure the M&P is worth $400 after I get it, the red dot $50 and the Sig.......well, that's the question.

But, a 226 and M&P I like and use, is better to me (I think) than a 1911 I just can't warm-up to. And I do want a red dot for an AR-15.

Then you really don't need a poll, do you?

Sell it, preferably to a 1911 guy/gal. You should net enough to buy any plastic gun you want or two, or a SIG.

Need? No, but I wanted a poll.

I would be getting a plastic gun I want......and a Sig......and a red dot.

I'm a revolver guy, but I like my 1911 (not a series 70). If you don't like it, though, why not make a trade for something you do like? I say, go for it. It's a fine deal if you think it's a fine deal. In the end, that's all that really matters.

Good deal, fair deal or bad, this just seems like it could be one of those trades you'll regret later in life.

I don't mind trading guns to get a gun, configuration or caliber I want. I have never (YET) paid $1200 to get a gun, let alone to have one customized after purchase. I don't know the customized 1911 market, but would guess you might have to wait a long while for the right guy to pay what you actually have in the gun...
Looks like you've already accounted for that: you said the gun would sell for ~$1600,and so would the package. I don't see a problem then, unless someone here offers you more cash than $1600, and I'm not hearing that!
Sounds like a win/win to me!

Sell the Colt, then buy the P226 you want...I'm sure the sale of the Colt would put you into a used Sig X5

The red dot is a chinese "tacti-cool" piece

[(Disclaimer) the poster does not own any firearms that he does not shoot often, so he is biased.]

Since you don't shoot the 1911 and don't think you will and you will shoot the M&P and the 226, trade them and enjoy them. firearms are made to be shot, so what good is one you don't shoot.

Hope you enjoy what ever you end up getting/doing.

P.S. I really like the thumb safety on the M&P.
