On another forum I belong to we have a kill thread, just a quick story and picture of our deer and I thought that'd be nice to have here.

This is my little spike (believe it or not, I thought it was a doe when I pulled the trigger). Stalked him about a mile on foot, he saw me and I thought I was done for. But, apparently he was a little on the dense side (along the caliber of depleted uranium) and came to challenge me. Smacked him in the shoulder at about 40 foot and then did a follow up shot as he fled that entered near the hip and carried all the way in to the other shoulder. He didn't make it 150 foot and dropped dead. So much for a .223 being "too little gun".

While we were field dressing him three deer wander through the open pasture less than 50 foot from us, stop and look at us as my sister scrambled for gun. She's not much for speed shooting and actually had to follow them in to their bedding area (where my spike had just come from) and promptly shot her own spike buck (again thinking she was shooting a doe) through the left lung, low. He went down but was still very alive so she followed up with a spine shot. We went up, poked him, he was dead. Went back, finished gutting mine, carried it the mile up to the car, and took the car back to get the truck. Upon returning with the truck I got out and realized her spike had and was trying to get up. My Glock 43 promptly solved that problem, I have no idea how he lived that long though, both of her shots were well placed.

Anyway, that's my deer season, all over so fast. Please, share your deer stories and pictures as you bring 'em down!

Got this one with my uncle in KY. Been meaning to get down there for years to hunt with him and never did. He almost died three times last year, and I figured I should probably get it done. One of the best weeks of my life!

Nothing in your story disproves that. Two small deer, short range, each having to be shot twice or three times===>that does not make for a good calilber recommendation.

I don't have the money to prove or disprove anything, the amount of repeated shooting of animals at all sorts of ranges and shot placements would be borderline animal cruelty. We're talking about the need to kill at least a thousand or two deer just to prove a point, I wouldn't even care to do that if I had the money.

All I intended to imply is that proper shot placement is king, as I've seen many times a more suitable caliber with similar or better shot placement end in worse results. A 223 is only as capable as the hands and eyes of the one holding it, much like any other rifle.

That being said, apparently we can't have a deer kill thread on thehighroad, it's just too much for some people. Could I get a mod or admin to lock the thread? It was never my intention to turn this in to a caliber debate.

Have no problem with a "kill thread"

But shooting a deer twice, then gutting the other one, taking it a mile away, swapping vehicles and then coming back to finish off the deer..........

that sounds like a "wounding thread".

Rookie mistake or a slob?
Whatever it was.........posting about it like it was no big deal................shameful.
