Deer hunting with 20-gauge + Rifled slugs?

For deer hunting with a 20 gauge:

Can you shoot rifled slugs through a 20-gauge with a modified chock?

Would an Improved chock be better?

Other recommendations?

IC choke seems to work better with slug, though the only way to be sure how your gun performs is to shoot it.

It goes agains conventional wisdom, but I have shot slugs thru my 20g Savage M24 (the .22/20g combo O/U) with a full choke, and it did okay. Never shot at a deer with it, but the accuracy was fine (~ 3-4 inches @50yds).

Go for it, I did it for years and harvested many deer with no problems.

Different slugs will perform better or worse in different barrels, do the range testing to see which does best in your gun, Good luck.

I used to use a full choked Mossberg bolt ation 20g when I hunted on public land where rifles were a no-no. It would shoot 4 inch groups at 50yrds, which was about as far as I was likely to shoot. Worked just fine on 4 deer. But the only way to really find out is grab a few boxes and find what your gun likes. And then practice. and then practice. And then maybe practice.

20 gauge Forster style slugs do well, the Rottweil Brenekke smites like a minor diety. Well placed 20 gauge slugs have fast, humane deaths as a result.

Most work I've seen with them has been Modified or more open.

I can't vouch for the choke, but a good friend of mine takes deer every year, and has for probably over 35 years. Although he's got a pretty fair collection of stuff to choose from, he's most productive with a 20ga (1100 IIRC).

He's got a 1x scope mounted so that he can get a good zero and have a definite aiming point. Before adding that, he'd missed a couple because he was too busy looking at the rack when he should have been looking at the front sight.
