Defense Distributed has released a video of the successful test firing by hand of their first complete 3D printed pistol, the "Liberator". The Liberator has only one metal part, the firing pin, made from a common nail.

In the video, Cody Wilson is shown firing the pistol by hand, to dramatically illustrate his faith in the design. The Liberator is a single shot pistol in .380 (9X17) caliber.

While firearms have been made in home workshops ever since they have been in existence, the ability to download computer files and have a computer controlled machine print all the parts to a functioning firearm has caught the public attention.

What about a spring, are they making that out of plastic or do they need a metal spring?

Happened faster than I expected, but the writing was on the wall months ago. I didn't realize it was in as strong a caliber as 380. They do have plastic springs, which are good enough for at least a couple uses. Remember, the original liberator was merely a means to obtain a "real" weapon in desperate times.

My guess is they printed the spring.....it's actually not all that difficult to print a simple lever or serpentine spring....if you do it right they can be surprisingly strong an durable

Interesting. I guess I knew that plastic springs were possible, or, actually, fairly common, but I didn't know that you could print a spring like that, strong enough to actuate a firing pin properly.

Amazing the things they are doing with these 3d printers. Is the printer this guy used the sort that can self replicate? The type where someone with one of these printers can print up another one?

Standby for the draconian new rules from "Da Gubmint" to restrict access to those dangerous 3D "Assault"printers!
Likely they'll try to make it Illegal for private citizens to own them.

wow. mega cool. I can imagine anti's waking up with night terrors at this point.

Which isn't too bad. commercializing this could lead to a monumental headache for them. Protestors will drown in the saliva from their own nervous breakdowns.

As I've been saying, expect to hear about them getting raided or an injunction placed to prevent the plans from being posted online. Also expect the law regarding undetectable firearms to be amended to include firearms that don't include metal as an integral part of their design (i.e., so the hunk of metal they added to make it detectable won't count). Note that the nail used for a firing pin really is only necessary if the pistol is going to stand up to repeat use. You COULD make a plastic firing pin and it would work for a few firings. You'd just need to make it overly long so that, as it wears down, it would keep working until it got too short.

There was a move a few years ago in Britain to do exactly that; they considered licensing of machine tools to prevent people from using them to make guns.
Never happened, but it demonstrates how the antis think.

My printer can hold hundreds of sheets of paper.
Paper can be folded into paper airplanes.
Airplanes can carry enough bombs to decimate cities.

Am I in possession of a high capacity weapon of mass destruction?

Plus, words and ideas can be put on paper.
My printer makes copies, too...

Someone, should do something about these electronic death machines.
For the children!

We should use our 2d printers to make something TRULY dangerous. Something that threatens not merely a man, but the VERY PHILOSOPHICAL UNDERPINNINGS of Zero's grand vision for society itself. Something like Thomas Paine's Common Sense... or the Federalist Papers... or the Declaration of Independence... or the US Constitution.

Personally, while I applaud the efforts of people to come up with solutions for home gun creation, I really wish they'd keep this stuff away from the mainstream media (I saw it on CNN today).

Just watch, more ridiculous laws will soon come down the pipeline to ban these "dangerous" guns. Just wait until 3D printers require registration...

I haven't followed this 3D printing very much and now I wish I would have.

The funny thing to me is that it has always been possible to make a gun. People have been making guns for hundreds of years. People have been making "zip guns" for many years. This really isn't anything new. It is pointing out the obvious, but this flew over the head of most people.

The original Liberator pistol. Chambered in 45ACP. Designed by a division of General Motors, as commissioned by the US Army Joint Psychological Warfare Committee, to be air dropped into occupied zones and concentration camps during WW2. Limited range, limited use, single shot design, intended to be used to kill soldiers when the opportunity presented itself, so that better arms could be acquired, increasing the chances of liberation.

The modern Liberator pistol. Chambered in 380ACP. Designed by Defense Distributed to be manufactured using unregulated 3D printer technology. Limited range, limited use, single shot design, able to be manufactured by the public at large when and where needed. Elicits a negative psychological reaction from certain members of the US government.

FWIW: I have fired an "original Liberator pistol".
..........and obviously knew a guy that owned one

What is so cool about this is that it combines the first and the second. Just like when the redcoats went around smashing print presses to keep the people from organizing. Also trying to keep the powder and ball away from them. This may be harder to regulate than the politicos think.

This shows how dumb they are, anyone can make a gun (in more effective 12 ga) with two pieces of 'unregulated' pipe and a nail.

OH THE HORROR - multiples of these pipes and nails are 'unregulated' and available in EVERY house, apartment, and business in America.

:banghead:

And the Anti's are already frothing at the mouth all over the Internet and MSM. It's stunningly hilarious.
