So, I have started in on this accuracy quest thing, I dont know if i picked a good caliber or not, but it is where i am going to start. I am going after 223 remington. Of course i have 223 and 5.56 cases, so that is another test variable. My goal, of course is as small as possible. I am imediatly looking at trying to find less than .750" groups @ 100 yards. If that is acheivable, I will try for .500" and see what happens. I have read about sorting cases forever, and do so. But on reading up on the accuracy disease, I see two different schools of thought.
One, is weighing each case, and sorting them by weight. The other, is measuring the internal volume of each cartridge, and sorting them that way. It would seem to me that the volumetric sorting would be better than the weighing method. But i must admit, it looks like it might be a lot harder to achieve. I was weighing up one group of cases, and they ran over a grain difference. I do not have enough accurate measuring tools to measure the internal volume of each shell at this moment, but I may be able to borrow it from my brother next time i see him.
Do you think it is worthwhile to try to find the internal volume of each case? If I do go that route, am I correct in thinking that the case manufacturer, or if it is military or civilian no longer important (meaning that a case that holds 5.3cc, is 5.3cc, no matter who makes it)?
