Dessicant help

Got my SHTF ammo all stockpiled up and have been looking for some dessicant packs to put in the ammo cans. Been to Wally-world, Sears, Sportsmen's Warehouse and others. Can't seem to find these packets anywhere. Sportsmen's had the blocks that can be dried back out, they're way to big, that's not what I'm looking for. Just wanting a whole bunch of the little cloth packets that come in things like shoe boxes. Thanks!

Go to a craft store and ask for silica gel. It's a powder used for drying flowers. Put some in an old sock, tie the end and you're good to go.

A lot of places that sell packing/shipping supplies sell the little prebagged silica gel dessicants in bulk.

Litter pearls in the cat section of petco etc.
small cloth bag and you have a reusable dessicant pack for cheap.

seconding the craft store silica gel. And the last time I checked, the pricing was much cheaper than any gun-vendor pricing. Recall it being in 1-lb and 5-lb cans.

You could also do it on the cheap and put a couple handfuls of rice in an old sock and tie it off...................

The real cheap way to go is to get busted drywall from the free bin at Home Depot. Cut it into smaller blocks, toast it at 250 for a couple of days and then put it into your ammo cans right away. Sucks up water like gangbusters.

Let me provide you with a warning about making your own.

I had some dissicant containers that I used in the bottom of my safe in North Carolina.

The water would collect in dissicant then drain out into the bottom of the containers and you would periodically dump the water. I got them at a hardware store and they worked great.

I got the bright idea of making my own by putting some of this stuff in a sock and then throwing them into a gun case.

I had a nearly new AK-47 that was in a plastic case with one of these socks. It got hot in the car, the dissicant melted and it was caustic as hell.

Ruined the finish on an AK 47 and scarred the receiver on a new winchester 94. The stuff melted and ruined the finish on these two guns in less than four hours total.

If you can find the silica type that are in the plastic bags you are probably better off than making your own. Shooters also makes a moisture proof bag that is real inexpensive and lasts for years.

At least test your made up version in the hot sun to see if it melts before you trust your guns with it!

Desiccant !!!

Go down to the local Motorcycle/ATV dealer/Snowmobile. shop and ask for some of the packets that they put in with most every machine. These are usually pretty big packets. If they are to big for your use, break them down to smaller packets, as mentioned above. I got mine for free out of the dumpster. I keep a couple of these in my gun safe, no problems .
