I was looking into some expensive options (~$200) for a detachable mag for the Howa 1500. Looks like Legacy sports has picked up on the demand for such a thing as they have introduced what looks like will be a reasonably priced mag and trigger lower (<$100). From their 2011 catalog:

NEW DETACHABLE MAGAZINES FOR YOUR HOWA OR WEATHERBY VANGUARD
Get more firepower from your Howa M-1500® or your Weatherby® Vanguard®! These new removable magazines from Adaptive Technologies, Inc. are available in 10 round capacities for your .223 or .308 caliber Howa M-1500 or Weatherby Vanguard, with .22-250 coming soon! Made for target shooters and varmint hunters, these polymer body magazines allow you to turn your four round box magazine into a high capacity detachable. Available for aftermarket conversions only, the new magazines come with a special trigger guard housing that replaces the existing floorplate of your Howa M-1500 or Vanguard. Will fit Smith & Wesson and Mossberg Howas.

A long while back there was a mentioning of a Howa rifle that was setup to take AR magazines for the .223 Howa, I've searched all over and cannot find any info online... only the mention of it here.

Weatherby has had a kit out for a couple of years for ~$200 before magazine! But only for Long actions.

There is another fellow that sells an aluminum bottom for ~$200.

You can find them on MidwayUSA. This one should go for around $60. I am going to call tomorrow to see if they are shipping yet.
