DH messed with my Detective Special - now I need help!

It should be all too easy for a "real" gunsmith to make a new front sight blade from flat stock. It should be way cheaper than buying a new barrel, which may cost $100 just to install, plus the cost of the barrel. Methinks this has been way over-complicated. :scrutiny:

She did,

You should be a bit more diligent in reading all the posts. A DH is alternately a designated hitter in the American League, a Damned Husband or a Darling Husband (depending on the mood of she who must be obeyed).

No she didn't actually. The "damn husband" reply was from another poster, and to be quite frank, I dismissed that as a "joke reply" figuring it was unlikely that this was the intended use.

I stand corrected on that though. Around these parts in Red Sox country... DH is still a Designated Hitter. ;) Never heard it used any other way.

We have a few other two and three letter acronyms we use around here for snarky replies.... but this is THR so I'll keep those to myself LOL ;)

try a neodymium magnet. they are very very powerful and the size of a quarter. should fit through the slots easily. they dont just attract metal objects. metal objects slam into them. if your fingers are in the way they will get slammed too. it may well work for you.

Ok, in my case, the DH may stand for doggoned husband, darling husband, doofus husband, or dear husband. It may stand for one thing when I type it, and another an hour later. You guys are lucky you aren't forum junkies - there are dozens of acronyms in use! I bet I could seriously confuse a lot of you if I wanted to - and some of them can get vary snarky! LOL!

As far as the sight issue, I currently have dimensions from 3 people with the same gen DS that are statistically similar, and enough to have one made that works. Colt also offered to send a call tag to me, as they thought they might have a complete barrel assembly stashed in the back... interesting, because the day before they didn't. But I'll gladly take the call tag!

While this gun is not by any stretch of the imagination a safe queen or a legacy, I just plain LIKE it, and would like it to be as appropriate as possible. So, if Colt can install the appropriate assembly, I'll pay for it. If they can't, my guys can now create a sight that matches what I had.

Thanks again for all the help and ideas - you guys (and women!) are wonderful!

You already did! :D

And I concur with heyjoe in post #56.

If the sight is in fact under the deck?
A neodymium pick-up magnet WILL get it out from under there.

1. Beat DH for messing with your handgun.

2. Practice self-flagellation for not immediately taking said handgun to gunsmith.

3. Have DH take deck apart to find front sight under penalty of 1. above continuing.

4. Find front sight.

5. Have DH rebuild deck; alternatively have him pay for it from his "fun money."

6. Have gunsmith reinstall front sight properly.

7. Forbid DH from touching your hardware under penalty of never touching your software.

What? Your DH broke your gun then lost the part. I would suggest a trade if your DH isn't to worn out. You may not get vey much in trade value for a DH but you may get box of 9mm out of it.
If all else fails send your DH fishing.

I think the one you want is shown in #15 on this post.

Maybe others make sights following some blueprint. I just used a photo (if available) and fitted the sight to the slot.

Yes, I have used both dimes and nickels for sights; nickels look better because they are basically German silver, from which many sights were made in the olden times. Modern dimes won't do, since they are sandwich metal and fitting them cuts through to the copper.

Neither is appropriate to that Colt DS; those sights were blued steel.

I don't know about those neo magnets but a lawn magnet used to pick up nails might find it. They have an extending handle and are like a foot wide. Roofers have them.

We are forum junkies and I've been one for about 14yrs. We just prefer to use whole words. ;)

I took DH to mean "Richard Cranium".

Yes, I'm sure the government has a whole section of agents who strictly go after those who use 100yr old dimes for front sights. They monitor threads like this just for that purpose.

Oh, Officer's Wife, I absolutely LOVE you!

DH has been proud to tell his friends for years that when we married, I promised I'd never slug him. Then he'd point out that (at that time) I had pistol/rifle instructor certification... and let them draw their own conclusions.

When my husband was assigned a desk a Brig General told him that I might benefit from a sound spanking. Dave told him that if he wanted to do something stupid he would transfer to Iraq where he would at least get a Purple Heart for it.

Send said DH out on quest for Mercury dime. They are ~90% silver, can be filed and shaped to fill slot, and take soldering very well. (Also, they are getting hard to find, and the quest may be suitably frustrating to serve as punishment and a reminder to not do it again). Leave the dime sight a bit tall, and file to bring point of impact and point of sight into agreement ("regulating" the sight) after it is installed. A dip of the finished part into molten sulfur will give it a nice blue-black color.

Call XS Sights. See if they can install and site in a XS Standard Dot Sight. You will love it. Tell the dummy that messed with it, " PAY UP".

leadbutt - thanks, but they do not have what I need for a DS.

Haywood - thanks to you too, but they only do Colt 1911's.

I think it's all covered now - but once again, thanks to all for the assistance.

My wife of 54 years has probably called me every variation of DH possible and she shoots as well as I do. This DH would send the DS back to Colt if they have a replacement barrel.

farm23, that's what we're looking at doing. I spoke with a different agent at Colt to get dimensions, and she was with the repair boss at the time who said he thinks he has what I need. Call tag arrived this morning, and I'm off to package it up and send it out!
