I have to ask a practical question - does the Congress have any authority with respect to state laws like SYG? Not the courts, the Congress.

Not a surprise coming from an anti-gun politician from Chicago. And please don't get me started on McCain. As far as I know, Congress does not have the authority to do anything about state SYG laws. But, unfortunately, they do have the ability to say do this or do that or we will cut off funding to your state for ______. Just like they did with the 55 mile an hour speed limit and so many other areas that they could not directly legislate.

Not that I can see. I guess they could try to bootstrap it into some kind of civil rights legislation, but that would have to be such a byzantine deal that I can't imagine it getting anywhere.

This sort of thing is primarily about looking pretty for constituents. We'll want to keep an eye on it, but it really seems to be for show.

I thank John Mccain for his service to our country, but he has done like so many politicians and stayed elected too long. I am embarassed for him. I wonder what the average age of a U.S. Senator is? I sure would like to have the "DEPENDS" concession in the Senate, it's got to be a $$ maker!

Since Murder and assault is enforced on the state level I can't see congress having in authority to do anything here even if they wanted to. Putting that aside, lets not forget if they did want to act it would take a super majority in the senate and a majority in the republican controlled house . They'll all talk and get their gold stars from the Brady Bunch and the NAACP and nothing will change.

Congress long ago established that they can override state law about any time they want to, and can find an excuse to do so. I can only hope that someone reminds them of the reasons for SYG laws in the first place - overzealous and bigoted prosecutors who wanted to crucify innocent people for trying to defend themselves.

Of course, SYG played no role in the Zimmerman-Martin case; it is a law the radical left and pro-crime element has been after for years, and they see their opportunity in the aftermath of a notorious case.

Perhaps Mr. Durbin can ask one of the state Senator's who sponsored a major expansion of SYG laws in Illinois in 1991 IIRC? Some guy named Barack Obama, who said it would be major step forward in protecting minorities from violence.

Just another example of how incredibly hypocritical our lefty friends can be.

Sen. McCain now represents himself, not Arizona. In the unlikely event he runs for re-election he'll lose. He has moved way too far to the left for most Arizona voters, and the Republican Party here knows it.

Sen. Durban's hearings will be nothing more then an opportunity to get his fellow Democrats some additional press coverage.

I don't consider anything beyond Congress's attempted reach. And if Congress fails or won't act re: SYG, you can bet our CE will be ready to try going it alone.

That one is called the 1st Amendment. Unfortunately SCOTUS has effectively ruled you can lie about public figures, which means public figures can lie about themselves.

John Mccain gave us Barack Hussein Obama II.:banghead: Time to vote the old out and get some new blood in there.:)

McCain has been a joke and a fraud for well over a decade. (Remember the McCain-Feingold BCRA atrocity that outlawed political free speech in the 2 months before an election?)

Unfortunately, he panders to get onto the Sunday morning talk shows more than a 14th Street hooker.

The problem the esteemed senators have is The voting citizens want syg so they can waste time studying it they can waste money studying it but they ain't about to piss-off voters mid term

Ya know, I think I'm at the stage where I almost don't care about these proposals any more. I know it's pretty bad, but I feel like I've been pounding my head into a wall. I debate with an anti, write my Reps & Senators, vote those who are pro-2nd in, donate to the NRA, hitting polls, continually round up to the next whole dollar on my purchases, and posting comments on various new sources. Short of spending a day at a pro-2nd rally and hoping that my bosses and peers at work don't see me on the news, what else is there?

Well you, and others like you, stopped a president cold. He couldn't get one single thing passed through the Senate, which was controled by his own party.

That's not too bad an accomplishment. ;)

COMMON SENSE SOLUTIONS?

Dick (the dufus) Durbin from the state with the city that has the highest murder rate and no "stand your ground" laws is going to review STAND YOUR GROUND.

IDIOTS RULE!
