So, I spent 40 hours in a car last weekend with an up-and-coming knife maker (Kyle Ver Steeg in Iowa) along with spending time in the woods. He made a tracker using some stock removal and some forging techniques.

Anyway, the conversation turned to "what would make a good 'donor' knife to be trackerized" and we thought the Becker BK-2 would make a decent 'donor' :confused:

I'm no expert, but that looks to be a handy knife. Other than varied aesthetic preference, what's the concept behind a "tracker" in terms of the intended application? Why have two different non-serrated edges on the same blade?

I'm asking purely out of interest in learning here. I've got no criticism for the work whatsoever - I just don't really understand the concept. :eek:

The back section (nearest the handle) is hollow ground, used as a draw knife. The other part is convexed and is just a regular slicing/chopping/knife edge.

He did the work, I believe he said it has about an hour and a half into it. That includes the time to strip it. He has a Burr King 2"x72" belt grinder. I have neither the skill nor the inclination to do something like that on my own. I have a few other things I have been toying around with, however nothing like that.

I figured you would be the most interested in it. It was basically a proof of concept thing. We had spent so long in the car (driving from NW Iowa to the Upper Lower Michigan and back roughly 40 hours) that it just turned into a "well, hell let's try it!"
 
After 40hrs in a car together I bet there were a lot of "concepts" that warranted proof.:evil:
