Did something difficult today...

I keep getting compliments about being a good and generous person, but as many offers as I've received from other members in PM's, this forum is full of good and generous reloaders. Thank you all for the offers to help me out with W-231. It's greatly appreciated and as hard as it was to give that powder up I'll be okay without it. I've been lucky enough to find enough of other powders to get me by for awhile.

But if anyone knows some good places to look for powder in northeast Alabama or northwest Georgia, and you don't mind PM'ing me that info I'd like to pass it along to my friend. But I believe he's getting transferred to Ft Campbell Kentucky soon if anyone knows some good shops around there.
It's at least a year away, bet we're getting a Cabela's here in Huntsville. There's also one opening in NW Georgia near the Chattanooga area (I think). That one will be opening sooner.

lol, maybe by then there might be a little powder available to put on those new and shiny shelves! LOL
A note on Cabela's. When they open a new store they are generally very, very well stocked and that includes reloading components like powders. Also for those local to the store that are Cabela's Club members they normally get an invite to shop the night before the Grand Opening day. Really nice as the place is much, much quieter. That is what they did when they opened the new Columbus, Ohio store.

It wasn't quiet at the Greenville SC store this past April...it was a madhouse...and all pistol powder and 22 ammo were gone quickly. Within a week, Cabelas became just another store w/out the hard to find stuff, and over-priced guns :)

But you're also talking about the very highest point of the "panic." Everything gun related was hard to get at that point. Ammo, components, magazines, and even some handguns were hard to find. At that point in time my local Cabelas was short on Glocks. I couldn't normally throw a rock at the gun counter without it hitting at least 2 Glocks.

Ft Campbell? Try Tennessee Gun Country on Ft Campbell Blvd. Also, the reloaders bench in Mt Juliet. The Reloaders Bench will be an hour drive. These days it would be easier to give away a press than it would a half pound of pistol powder. :)

Plus, Midsouth Shooters Supply is in the same city as Ft Campbell (Clarksville, TN). If he does get the Campbell assignment, tell him welcome to TN. The patron state of shooting stuff!

Cabelas in NW Georgia Chattanooga area

Cabelas is scheduled to open in fall of 2015. They are now preparing the site, next to COSTCO. Due to open about the same time one exit up and the other side of I-75 is Bass Pro Shop.

Bang!, thanks for the info. We're going to do some shooting tomorrow while he's still in town. I'll pass it along to him. I'm sure he'll be glad to know he'll have more options there than he currently does. I know I'd probably be happy to have Midsouth in my town.

Good info Ron. I will look into that member thing. Maybe just something to fill out on their website?

I talk to my Gander manager sometimes and once he told me they werent getting anything in because the office was having it all shipped to one of their stores that was having a grand opening. So that does make sense, i guess thats a common sense tactic. An opening with no product wouldnt be to grand I guess!

I think Ive heard the Reloaders bench is a pretty good shop. A member here told me about it once, I do believe.

Just filled out a doo hickey for the Cabela credit card. Maybe that will get me in the door before the grand opening. Sorry for gettin off topic Sasquatch.

I think that may be the way to get in the "club".

I ain't mad at ya. On the Cabela's Club thing, you don't have to apply for and receive one of their Visa cards. The Visa card gives you 2% back on purchases that you make at Cabela's or Cenex gas stations and 1% back on purchases made elsewhere, after you pay off those purchases of course. The non-Visa club card is just a "rewards" card that gives you 2% back on Cabela's purchases. If you don't need/want the credit card the rewards card is still worth having even if you rarely make purchases at Cabela's. I only have 2 credit cards myself and one is the Cabela's Visa. The interest rate is comparable to my other card.

Thx. yea Im not a big Credit card guy myself. I am the guy who applies for one when a store offers 20% off a purchase for filling them out though. Then i usually close it.

I clicked on "join the club" or whatever and it took me to the credit card app.

Thanks.
Ok so the rewards card just keeps track of what you buy and gives you points you can redeem I guess?

Though Im mainly interested in getting in the "club" so I can browse before the grand opening like reloadron was saying. (if they offer that at at ours when it opens)

So that is probably the club card I guess? -the one you linked?

Hell, Im just going to fill everything out.

OK, while the Cabela's thing is fun I think we have taken this thread way off topic. I am guilty as anyone else too.

KansasSasquatch deserves quite the atta-boy in his sharing and giving away of scarce and cherished powder and other reloading supplies. Let's hope that what goes around comes around for him. What he did was really pretty nice and he asked nothing in return.

Squatch,

Your a good man. I'd have had to do the same. As far as Cabelas is concerned, I had their credit card and was a member of their premier customers club. They have treated me well and even after I couldn't keep up to their pace for this club, I received a hard bound catalog and a really good very fancy folding hunting knife from them one day and I had to wonder why they sent it to me. It made me smile and feel good for them remembering.

I taught him how to reload about a year and a half ago. When he came over the other day I was giving him a bit of a refresher course. Put my Hornady #16 shell holder on the press I gave him and never remembered to take it off. DOH!!! He was staying about an hour away from here so it didn't make much sense to drive all the way out there when I can drive 1/4 of that distance and pick one up cheaply from Cabela's. Besides, he'll need that shell holder for .223 anyways. So I picked one up the other day to load up some test loads for a new-to-me rifle.

Well guess what.... Cabelas had 3 shelves full of assorted .22lr ammo for "normal" prices. The one time I've seen that much .22 ammo in the last 2 years, the LGS was wanting about $10 more than Cabelas sold it to me for. But it gets better. I had my one brick maximum in my hand (Winchester 500rnd), went to look at a bi-pod for my rifle, stepped back into the aisle with the .22 ammo a few minutes later and the ammo fairy had just dropped off a dozen 1400rnd buckets of Remington. SWEET!!! I almost dropped that brick of Winchester trying to put it back on the shelf too quickly. So Karma already repaid me.

But then I go home and load up my test loads so I can visit my buddy again and do some shooting on his family's land before he leaves town again. Got all the way out there and realized I forgot my test loads at home. Well darn. But I had about 400 rounds that I had loaded up awhile back for an AR. So I carefully try them out in my bolt action, although I was sure they'd be safe (middle of the road load of CFE223 w/ 55gr Z-Max). At 50 yards they were shooting one hole groups once I got my new scope sighted in. I did a 15 round rapid fire group. There was a single hole in the bullseye big enough to put my thumb through. So it wasn't a tiny one hole group but I was letting those shots off as quick as I could work the action. Not bad considering it wasn't tailored ammo, the rifle was new to me, and I was shooting quickly. But Savage DOES make some damn good rifles, so maybe its not all from Karma. I'll take those results either way.
