I finally got around to checking out my herters 30 -30 die set. Just resized a case and the neck is way to big! Pulled the die apart and the expander button measures .319. Is there a wildcat round like this? Can I just turn down this expander? Can I get parts for these dies? Sorry for all the questions never had this happen.

Herters wouldn't have, but somebody else might have in the almost 40 years since Herters went out of business.

Wow, I had an old 30-30 die that had a simular modification. I bought it at a yard sale and when I tried to resize a case, it was way bigger! Must have been a rather common thing going on 30 or 40 yrs. ago?

Without seeing it, Yes.

There might be something different about the Herters expander I don't remember anymore.
But I think they were just about like all the rest of them back then.
Seen one, ya seen'em all.

As such, you should be able to turn it down. However, a lathe would sure come in handy to take off that much evenly.

It needs to be about .3055" to .306" for the 30-30.

The lathe part is no problem, I'm a machinist so 10 minutes on a lathe at work is no biggie. I wasn't sure if the die would have been modified any more to resize the .32.

I don't know if it has or not.

If you resize a fired 30-30 case without the expander in the die, does the die resize the case neck?

If it does, it would seem you still have a 30-30 sizing die.

I don't know where you got the old Herters dies?
But it could be possible your dies got put together for eBay out of somebodys reloading bence junque box.

The expander in my Herters 30-30 dies is .304. Try sizing one with the expander out to make sure the die hasn't been modified. If it sizes it down to .304 inside, or a little less, you should be good to go if you turn the expander down. If the die has been modified too, you are putted.
