U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), sponsor of the federal "assault weapon" and "large" magazine "ban" of 1994-2004, is asking President Barack Obama to direct the BATFE to reinterpret a provision of the Gun Control Act of 1968 to prohibit the importation of various semi-automatic firearms and their parts.

NRA-ILA article here

I've deleted a few posts that veered into politics with no relation to guns, or that were desperately grasping to be gun related.

I've also moved this to activism where we can have a productive discussion on how to counter it.

My initial thoughts are to write my senators and representatives. Let your congressmen know that Senator Feinstein is attempting to bypass the legislative process by encouraging the executive branch to alter enforcement of a long existing law. Let them know she's doing this because she couldn't get the legislation she wanted passed, so now she's attempting to circumvent congress and impose her will on the American people.

What she's doing is also unethical. So, include the above when you write your senators, but also request that they push to have Senator Feinstein brought under a full Senate ethics investigation.

Let's take the fight to her, and let's discuss other ways to counter attack.

ugaarguy; she's so deeply embedded in Washington politics and secure in her leftist district, there's no simple or easy way to dislodge her.

All we can really do is hope she retires, sooner than later, and that her successor isn't as rabid. I'm sure part of her master plan is to carefully groom a worthy successor, though. So I won't hold my breath.

Dislodging a political machine like that is about as likely as Chicago suddenly becoming non-corrupt.

Proposing replacing her is not a practical solution. Her constituency will reelect her until some catastrophic scandal involving her breaks to the public.

First thing is to fact check the NRA-ILA and find out the spinless version, then notify all your Senators and House Reps that one of their own is promoting their authority be usurped, then flood Harry Reid and John Boehner with requests to opposed this effort to usurp the authority of the legislative branch. Short simple emails and phone calls are the best approach instead of long rants. Simply tell them that you're opposed to Diane Feinstein's efforts to usurp the powers of the legislative branch by demanding POTUS to direct the BATFE to change the legally validated long standing interpretation of the "sporting purpose" requirements for importation of firearms. Such misguided thinking would prohibit the 20 year importation of firearms from allies and trading partners that Americans have used for hunting, competition, and recreation for decades.

Folks,

Let's focus on what we can constructively do to deal with this particular attack and leave the Feinstein animosity for a less serious issue. She's a threat, she's always been a threat, she'll always be a threat. The only thing we should be surprised by is...well, nothing.

What else can we do other than to make our elected officials know about this and apply pressure to the legislative leaders? C'mon, think!

While I think this is the best course of action, I do not expect it produce direct results. Senators may privately object to her action and my send their own letters the the WH in protest of any orders or directies, but any public challenge to her actiin in the Senate would attack a prerogative to do the exact same thing that each senator probably wants to preserve.

The only real objection from the Senate will not be to her action, but the issue...maybe. Se we definitley need to remind our reprecentatives and senators of our objection to both.

Today i wrote letters to the OK congressional delegation about senator Feinstein's proposal; you should write your representatives too. If the executive branch decides to implement the Feinstein proposal the only thing that may change their minds is a congressional uproar.

There is precedent for banning guns from import under the "sporting purposes" clause of the GCA 1968. The administrations of three previous presidents banned guns from import in 1984, 1986, 1989 and 1998.

Yes, but Bush #1 was a sitting president, and not a senator trying to usurp the powers of the senate. Regardless, that ship sailed a quarter century ago. So, let's focus on the here and now, and how we can fight this current attack on our rights.
