Dillon powder measure bars

Yeah, I assumed you were demoing......I will say that's a pretty flare in the first picture!.....and I thought I saw an "M" step on the expander in that picture. DAA expander instead of Dillon? Or does Dillon add one on theirs now?

Dillon uses two different methods now and back in the ‘80’s made the powder funnel different than they do today.

The one on the left is the early one, less surface area in contact with the case but still expands the case and bells the mouth. Next one over is the current ones they use for the SDB and all 3 digit presses. The next one is what they use of the 4 digit presses for the powder funnel it only bells the case mouths because the backup rod for the swager is the expander (right). I have never had a reason to use aftermarket expanders.

That’s for pistol cases, rifle cases use funnels that go around the OD of the mouth instead of inside because powder bridging would be horrendous. They are the same for all their machines.

I have loaded extensively on Ch auto champion presses, star universals, dillon rl1000, dillon rl450, and dillon rl550, and all the progressive products Lee manufactured up until 2018 when I quit using them.

Star fixed bar method is the most accurate and enjoyable in regards of repeatability and accuracy.

I figured bringing that to the case activated Dillon* [powder measure] was a swell concept.
* My edit of what I assume you wanted to say.

All well and good, but before jumping straight to the "Fix", you first need to verify the issue.
Jmorris had an excellent idea. Simply add a mark to your powder bar adjuster. If the mark is not moving, then there's no need for set screws, Loctite, or any of the other suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Before I got my Dillon 550 I was a "weigh every charge" fanatic. Old school and I simply did not trust volume type powder measures. Especially on the new 550 because the measure is being jiggled with ever stroke of the handle. The 550 is my first progressive. So being anal like I can be sometimes I weighed every charge thrown on the Dillon powder measure for many hundreds of rounds. Never varied more than +/- 1 tenths of a grain (Bullseye) in both 45acp and 9mm.

I'd never seen that left one before......saw what looked like a "step" and assumed wrong. So it's not an "M" step at all.....because that diameter starts at the bottom! Interesting. So then rather than using a step, it's actually a recessed band. What in the world was that for? The only Dillon expander I've work with is the second from the left, which DAA copied but adds the "M" step.

Only thing I can think of is brass likes to stick to metal better than air. That said, they did quit doing it. I have both and can’t tell a difference myself but I lube everything because it Makes the operation noticeably smoother.
