I have two Dillon 550b conversion kits from different calibers that both have a #3 shell plate. I think I may have switched them in error when I put them back in the little blue storage boxes.

Are all the Dillon #3 shell plates the same in every way?

What about the #3 brass colored pins that hold the cases in alignment in the press?

I assume the #3 shell plates and #3 pins are the same and that the only difference in the Dillon conversion kits is the silver colored powder drop/flaring insert for the powder die; right?

The shell plates that carry the same number are the same. The gold buttons will differ depending on caliber, but yes, a #3 is a #3.

There is a compatability chart that shows which shell plate, buttons and powder drop are used for each caliber. You don't necessarily need to buy the entire conversion kit for each caliber.

The numbers on both the shell plate and brass pins are for iidentification, if the numbers are the same, they are the same.

Other differences could be the plastic piece at the case tube and metal guide that goes into stage 1. #3 shellplates and buttons are same-same.

As others have said, the same number on brass pins or shell plates indicates the same physical size. Also the same letter on case expanders ("powder funnels") indicates the same caliber. However, you may see small differences indicating design updates if you closely compare multiple Dillon pieces, especially those made 10 years apart.

The chart of shell plate and buttons is in the back of your 550 owners manual. If you've misplaced that, you can download the newest version in PDF format from the Dillon web site. The Enos site is good, but may not always have the latest versions.
