I have two pistols with polished flats and each of them have recently gotten noticible stains on them. The stains are a light blotchy discoloration, almost as if oil was on the slide, but it is not oil. One gun is stainless, the other blued. They weren't like this before and I've tried spraying them with gunscrubber and then wiping them down with a cloth soaked in oil and then wiping with a dry cloth and the discoloration is still there.

Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to get rid of it?

I've had that on a polished stainless pistol. Just took some Flitz to the flats and everything was fine.

Don't know about a blued gun. I'd be afraid to try it unless someone else here already has.

Out of curiosity, what oil do you use? How do you store the guns? Are they directly on foam? On the same shelf perhaps?

if it was just one gun, I'd suspect a finish issue, but two guns owned by the same guy? Might be something you're doing.

:(

Cratz2,

The guns are both 1911s, one stainless one blued. I lube them with Tetra grease and oil but wipe their exteriors down with CLP. I store them on gun racks, not foam.

I can't figure out what it is. It just happened. I shot them at the range, took them home, stripped and cleaned them (Mpro7). After cleaning, I blasted them with Gunscrubber and then wiped them down with a cloth soaked in CLP and re-assembled. When wiping the exterior down with a dry cloth I noticed the stains. I tried some more CLP and then dry wipe again and they are still there. This is my usual cleaning routine so I don't think it is because of that. The strange thing is, I've had these guns for awhile and they never had these stains before.

That is strange! The CLP should have anything to do with it.

The reason I asked about the foam is if perhaps other guns had been on that foam in the past... who knows what might happen. I've never used the Tetra grease, but if the products you are using now are the same that you've been using for a while, it seems kind of odd.

Any chance they've both guns have been in a new (to you) holster recently?

CLP has teflon in it, the discoloration is sort or a splotchy rainbow or greyish effect????

Its the teflon in the CLP, its most apparent on highly polished blue.

You can clean it off with some acetone or maybe mineral spirits.

It doesnt hurt anything though

Thanks for the responses guys. It is a mystery.

The spots do look splotchy but I've used CLP for awhile now. I'll try some of your suggestions.

MS yes, but not acetone. (in conjunction with gunscrubber anyhow). Gunscrubber and acetone make a bad combination. IMNSHO, gunscrubber itself is,,well,,to be kind,,questionable.
