"Discreet" rifle case..?

Where is everyone carrying their rifles that they need to fool everyone about what is inside? A mall? a movie theator?
I used to live in a "fourplex" and the immediate neighbors were not the issue. It was being on a cul-de-sac with ten other buildings and 40 windows all facing out to where everyone was parked. Always eyes upon a person.
"Discretion" is the noun version of the adjective "discrete."

I guess it just depends on the situation. If you are already rolling with a bunch of other travel bags and suitcases, a guitar case doesn't really expand your footprint of exposure. However, if it's just grouped with an old sweatshirt and muddy running shoes in the back of your SUV, the target value has definitely increased over some other crappy bag.

This is one reason I don't like SUVs, thanks to the marketing geniuses and the feds everyone now has a giant glass window showing their storage in their vehicle. A trunk is vastly superior in that respect.

People mention nondescript vehicles, remember when you travel, out of state plates tell the bad guys you may have luggage with valuable items.

Don't leave anything of value in your car. Guns, never.

This is true to a degree, but having a non-descript vehicle has many advantages, including less attention from thieves. Even if your license plate offsets that some its still better to be in a Crown Victoria than a Porsche SUV thing.

OK, the reason for the quotes in the title is because I got an e-mail/ad from one of the Brownells touting their sale on their "Discreet Tactical Rifle Case" and it's just a standard black soft case with BROWNELLS on the side in red letters. Personally, that's not my idea of discreet..? o_O

What are some effective and realistic versions of discreet cases that members here have used?

My cases are just black bags. Talk about discreet - I have seen GUN SAFES, which I know is not your point, that look like soda vending machines - pretty cool.

Except musical instruments and tools often cost more than the guns that your trying to hide. Probably a lot easier to pawn for the local thief too?

That's absolutely factual ,however the grubbier that carrying case is and a couple of small outside pockets with some funky tools in them completes the illusion of near worthless or alternative content . I'd Never leave any bag inside MY vehicle ,unless it was well hidden vehicle locked and absolutely necessary . However can fully understand where people living in close proximity to other nosy neighbors , might simply want a disguise bag . As I drive an F350 CC 4x4 ,with a hard shell structural glass and carbon fiber tonneau cover and super core-cell lock box mounted in the bed ; NO one sees anything . I also built both of those which are fully lockable as is the tail gate Dbl throw bolt lock .

Sometimes an illusion is all that's necessary and peoples minds generally are simple :)

As many have posted my primary concern is being "gray" while traveling to/from vehicle especially at a hotel. Of secondary (yet nearly equal importance) is a subdued appearance while loading my car at home. I think one of the bag features that really helps is minimal external gear pouches and velcro flaps. Those shout for attention.

Keep an eye on the used market for Waller bags. They were manufactured in Norwalk, Connecticut and stopped operations years ago. Definitely a premium-grade bag and their clever use of unexpected red, blue, green, and gray (and predictable black, of course) waterproofed cotton duck fabrics was ahead of their time.

Even the texture of their selected fabrics was non-threatening and helped further disguise the contents.
My sense is if another company took their stylistic approach they would likely sell like hotcakes now.

Yes, that way everyone will think there's only TRASH in that rainbow colored camo case with stickers of IDIOTS all over it, and the Giant bright colored glasses add to the overall MORONIC effect.
Yeah, but then some redneck homophobe may want to tie you to a fence and torture you.

This is more or less what I've been using for over 10 years. A regular guitar case would work better for most rifles and carbines, but the bass case is needed for my shotguns. I can easily carry two fully assembled 500's or 870's, 4 boxes of ammo, eye and ear protection. Little heavy in that configuration, which is why I love the shoulder straps. Bought that after my apartment got broken into...people could see me headed out to the range with gun cases. Haven't used a traditional case since, the gig bag for long guns, tool bags for handguns. Haven't had a problem since
