hey guys I was messing with that "draw your own AR thing"

And I was thinking of turning my AR, which looks like this,

into a dissipator style that looks like this.

Other than a screwed on front sight post, grinding off my old front sight, and installing the new rifle length magpul moe set when it comes out...

Am I going to run into any unforseen issues?

I know the dissipator style was kinda 90s, just wondered why it fell out of popularity and if there is some reason for that.

Thanks in advance!

I've always thought the 'dissapator' style carbine to make the most sense in a civilian rifle. I could never see the appeal of having a shorter sight radius when it wasn't required.

They want that M4gery look lol

I agree, why have a shorter sight radius when your barrel is the same length anyway.

Thats my thought. and less cramped hand room. Just got back from a class and kinda wished I had a little more room to grab that sucker from the prone.

Either way should be a dirt cheap project.

Its a carbine length gas system, never really bought into the whole Mid-Length thing and since the gun is so far 100% I hate to change anything. I would rather just modify it with some cheap grips and a cheap FSB.

Are you talking about modifying something you already have? Cause there'll be a gas-hole in the barrel at the wrong place if you move the gas block. Also, if you have an M4 profile barrel, the ring cut out of the barrel for holding a grenade launcher might be very close to where you want the sight to sit.

I know Bushmaster sells dissipator uppers.

I'm waiting on a 16" bbl 7.62x25 upper with a rifle-length handguard - I think for shooting with irons a longer sight-radius is preferable to an M4 sight radius....some people don't like the weight up front, some don't like the look, and some have more invested in optics than in the gun, so iron-sights don't matter to them.

Yeah its something I already have. I dont plan to remove the gas block, I am going to grind down the front sight so it clears the handgaurd, leaving the gas block portion intact, and then putting on an ADDITIONAL front sight up front. Thats generally how its done I believe.

I like my current upper, and really dont want to buy anything else since it has proved to be very accurate and reliable with both my 22lr kit and normal 5.56.

Kinda the "if it aint broke" approach.

I don't know how the hand guard above attaches but if the barrel nut is part of the tube you will have to mill holes for the gas block pins (both sides so you can take it off too). Sorry photo but you can see where they are.

Seems to me that if you're gonna change barrels, then may as well change to a "middy-dissy" instead of a carbine-dissy. I would also not do this unless irons was gonna be my primary (i.e only) sighting device; otherwise, I'd rather have the weight savings of a regular middy handguard.

He's not changing barrels.

The rifle length handguards are becoming popular in three gun competition. Some shooters prefer the extra control with a forward hold, and drop the VFG completely. As more hunters move to the AR platform, long handguards seem to be preferred for a traditional look, and because longer barrels are used. The M4 carbine look with half guards and pencil stick barrel comes off too tactical for a lot of hunters. It also lets them brace off the guards or freefloat with less chance of shifting the point of impact.

The M4 fad is winding down. With the SCAR, XCR, and ACR on the market, it's now old school.

Yeah I almost gave up on this thread because everyone seems to think I am doing something I wasnt :)

I am going to do it, as soon as the handgaurds are released this summer. Will post pics then!
