Ditching modern rifles?

I started out with mil surps for financial reasons,

I expect that's true of a good many folks who either bought a low-expense rifle recently or bought a milsurp back when that's all anybody could afford.

but I've stuck with them because the scoped, sightless Remchesters are about as interesting as drying paint.

I've shot a couple of those kind and liked 'em okay, but I don't like not having a choice where sights are concerned. Therefore, I got into milsurps so I could have sights on my crankbolts. Some of 'em actually have pretty good sights, and triggers too.

I like the old style CZ's, but their "American" line pretty much brings together all the features I hate in traditional hunting rifles. I also don't care much for scopes. Shooting with a scope is like making love through an interpreter.

Let's see... little or no drop in the comb, no sights on the barrel, probably got that lawyerproof trigger too. No, me and scopes ain't the best of friends either. I don't mind a scope across the bench when I'm trying out loads, but it seems I can do the same thing with a good set of irons... speaking of which, I'm fixin' to have this Foolproof mounted on my Savage .243 like I've been talking about for a while. Seems that really cheeses off a bunch of benchresters to hear... they always holler "oh, no; glass it!".

My M44 Mosin is in the shop right now having a Leupold LER scout scope mounted, and it already has a synthetic stock. I plan on hunting with it this fall and it should turn out to be a great brush gun. I could have afforded a used Rem 700 with some decent optics, but I wanted something different to start my venture into hunting.

I hunted with a Milsurp SMLE Jungle carbine I bought at 18 for $40 bucks. Practice ammo cost $2.00 a hundred at that time and commercial soft points were $8.00 per 20.

I shot it for 5 years before getting a commercial sport rifle. The first box of commercial ammo counted for 16 deer. The other 4 used in practice.

I went to all different types of firearms and stayed with flintlocks for 15 years as at that time I competed in BP line matches.

Now I hunt with what ever I am currently shooting for fun. (except for NFA firearms) Right now and for the past 2-3 years it has been a Bushmaster carbon fiber with handloads using Barnes X bullets. The 4 lbs or so it weighs is nice and easy for my arthritic body to carry all day.
