Howdy! I am wondering if anyone has a dixie gun works Colt Walker. If you do tell me how it is. Ive read reviews and iam not totally impressed. I was thinking about a DGW Walker gun Kit, but now I dont know if those guns are worthy. Ive heard of the timing being off, and little parts breaking on them. It you have one, or know someone who has one give me a little review on what you like or dislike about it.

If it doesn't specifically list a maker, I'd not buy it from Dixie or anywhere else as far as that goes. If it's made by Uberti, Pietta or Euroarms, I would be o.k. with it. I'm afraid several of the revolvers sold by Dixie under their trade name are manufactured by Palmetto, and I won't ever pay for another one of those!

The Dixie Walker pistol kit might be Ok and then it might not. I have one that came to me because the original builder couldn't get it into proper time. It is a clunker. A friend has one and its not as bad. Keep in mind that parts on these repros are not interchangable from one manufacturer to another. I get the impression that the factorys that assemble the Walker revolvers simply throw all the parts that need a lot of hand fitting into a bin rather than spend time. These are then used to make up the "kits".

There are a couple of problems with the Walker as made by all except Uberti. They have a very slow twist like one turn in 64" and deep groove rifling. Mine came with a chamber diameter of .445 and a barrel groove diameter of .468. I have since bored the chambers to .470 and shoot .475 round balls in it with reasonable accuracy. Before, it wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

The Walker has a problem with the loading rod dropping after almost every shot. It is also notarious for jamming on spent caps. Yup, its a brute, but these defects kept it from becoming very popular. Subsequent Colt models had improvements in these areas.

The original Walker had a chamber diameter of .453, a bore (groove) diameter of .451. (land diameter was .44) It was rifled with a gain-twist that began as 1 in 72" and ended with 1 in 32". They were designed to shoot a 225 grain .454" conical bullet with a slight heeled base that facilitated loading.

The only repro Walker worth buying is the Uberti. It has the best workmanship, fit, and finish. It has a slightly undersized chamber diameter (.447") but a proper bore diameter (.451") and a rifling twist of 1 in 48" that will work with round ball and short conicals. It is realtively easy to polish the chambers out to the correct diameter of .452" to get them to shoot even better.

The dixie walker and walker kit are made by Palmetto. Palmetto has no interest in makeing a usable product. Dixie also has kits and walkers made by Uberti. the uberti kit is virtually finished except for external polish and finish.

I like the answer, generally, by Curator. Allow me to add one thing: Uberti Walkers are all forged steel for the frame and barrel, and Uberti has a better reputation for the internal parts, too. Many other brands are cast and more than a little suspect. I would suspect that correcting timing issues and rough fit for internal parts would be an expected part of kit building (else, why is it a kit?), the fewer of those that a novice has to deal with, the better.

BTW, I just had a customer service issue with DGW and they were absolutely splendid to deal with. They have great customer service, so BUY FROM DGW.

Uberti

I can not vouch or comment on any of the others but my Uberti is awsome. The only little "issue" was the loading lever catch was loose in its dovetail. Something that was extremely easy to remidy.

It shoots very well and to point of aim (high of course but windage is perfect).

okdoky. Ill save my money and get a Uberti. What about this one? Is this a good deal? I've been looking around, and this seems to be the best deal out there. One question, at the top of the page it says Uberti, Cimaron. Does this mean it's still made by Uberti? Why does it say Cimaron on there too? I just want to be sure it's a uberti, not a cheapo brand.

cimmaron is a major importer of Uberti arms. The owner Jack Harvey, has had a lot to do with the improving quality of Uberti imports and their authentic styling. the outfit you found is in Llano, Tx and is a major distributor. Cimmaron is in Kerville,TX along with their outlet store, Texas Jack's.

Ahh... thanks, I would have never found that Walker for $280. Im gonna go order one soon.

I thought

that S&S took a price increase to 299?

I have been to Arms 2 Armor in person and I can vouch for that operation - the proprietor is a great guy - you will get excellent service.

Nothing against S&S - just don't have experience with them.

S&S has a.pdf file for an online catalog; it still shows the Uberti Walker at $289. They may well have increased the price to $299 without notice due to the falling dollar value.

I ordered a Walker from arms2armor just the other day. Sent them an e-mail asking a couple questions. They replied promptly and politely. The Walker was shipped shortly after I paid and I was sent a tracking number. Should be at my house come Tuesday. I highly recommend them.
