DNA from police accuser's clothing matches his own

Tests show the DNA from a substance found on the clothing of a man who said Minneapolis police officers urinated on him was his own, authorities said.

Two Minneapolis police officers were accused of picking up Ronald Lee Johnson, 37, and a woman on Jan. 24 and dropping them off at a housing development. Witnesses have said they found Johnson outside with urine on his clothing and on his head.

Based on the DNA analysis, the substance identified on Johnson's clothing was his and not that of the officers, police spokesman Ron Reier said.

The attorney for Johnson, Larry Leventhal, said it is not surprising that Johnson's own DNA would be found. Johnson had been drinking and it may have been his own drool, Leventhal said. But he added there continues to be DNA that was found on the clothing that was not identified as Johnson's.

Leventhal filed a notice of claim with the city on behalf of Johnson, saying Johnson's constitutional rights have been violated. Such a notice is often a precursor to a lawsuit.

Police Federation president Sgt. John Delmonico said the officers, Cory Fitch and Kris Kramer, were falsely accused and he wants officials to examine possibly filing false report charges against Johnson.

False allegations are very damaging to Officers. They can be suspended until an investigation is complete, grilled by IA, and worst of all, tried in the press. Even when exonerated by IA and the courts there's always that stigma left behind after being accused in the paper, "He got away with it". This can hold up promotions, deny special duty, etc. How do they ever recoup? They can't sue, as most of the people falsely accusing them don't have a pot to piss in. They can't sue the ambulance chasing attorneys who run to or even develope these cases. The only thing they can hope for is support from their community (and in todays apathetic world that's few and far inbetween). Anyone here every been falsely accused/sued? How did it affect your life and what tips do you have for anyone else?
