I have an XDm in 9mm.I have had it for 2.5 years and have shot 1000-1500 rounds through it. The last few times I have taken it to the range, I have notice something I thought was strange. When I firmly seat a full magazine into the gun with its slide locked back, the slide is released and goes into battery. I am almost certain this is a new development (I know I should not be lacking in certainty about something like that, but...). Today I spoke to the gunsmith at the local Bass Pro and he said that unlike the standard XD the XDm is designed that way. He said this with some confidence.

Still it does not sound right to me. Anyone have an XDm that does that? Is he right? Or do I have a problem that I need to contact Springfield about?

Doesn't work that way on my wife's XDm 5.25. If you insert a full magazine into the gun with the slide locked back, you have to release the slide using either the slide release or sling shot the slide. Call Springfield and ask them how it is supposed to function - if you are having a problem they will issue a shipping label to you so they can get the pistol and fix the problem.

Many of the plastic pistols do this, and some do not.

My xDM (with a lot more rounds through it than that!) does not. Many Glocks, M&Ps, and some xDs do.

A lot of people consider it a benefit as it usually take a step out of the sequence of a speed reload. Slam the mag home and the slide will return to battery without you hitting the release.

If you're going gently and it is doing this when you really didn't want it to, take a look at the slide stop lever and the slide and see if something is unduly worn. Springfield will fix it for you if it is damaged.

Try this; with the gun empty, manually pull back the slide and push up the slide lock making sure its in the full up position. Take a loaded magazine and of course keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction slam a loaded magazine home. I'll bet you that the slide remains back.

Usually when the slide starts falling during loading its because the slide lock isn't getting fully engaged in the slide notch. This starts happening when the magazine springs get a bit tired and don't push the stop up with as much gusto as they did when new.

If you have kept your magazines loaded for the last 2.5 years the springs are probably starting to weaken a bit or have taken a set. One way you can test this is to rack the slide back with an empty mag in place, then check to see if you push up on the slide stop does it move a bit more into engagement?

The fix is relatively simple. go to Wolf Gunsprings and buy some replacement mag springs to rebuild your mags or just live with this new "feature" until the slide stop doesn't engage at all and the slide never stays back and then replace the springs.

Steve C's post is most likely dead on. Does it do it with both mags? Neither of my XDM's do that and they have higher round counts than yours. One thing is for certain, people who sell guns for big chain stores (Walmart, Cabela's) generally have no idea what they're talking about. I've chatted with guys at Walmart that acted like they knew alot about a certain firearm only to find out that they've never even owned or fired one.
