Do I really need a .45?

Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: Because it's better.
Longest Answer: Because it's more, and it's another caliber and another gun.
:D

Yes, a .45 is nice. Heavy bullet very soft recoil for its energy level and ammo is as cheap as 40 S&W. Try out a few different platforms, 1911, SA XD, SIG, and even the little Taurus PT145 eleven shot cannon. Then, when you have mastered the heavy slow .45 and the light and fast 9mm and .40 you can start on the heavy and fast 10mm:D

I learned pistols on a 1911 in the ARMY. I am a firm believer in a 45 as the best in a personal protection round. Pistol engagements are usually between seven out to fifty feet. You want the round to take the threat off it's feet, not to past through. I want that big piece of slow moving lead to do just that. A .38 spl, PLUS + P, I don't take the chance. Someone under the infulence of something, maybe not. A 45, YES. A 357, 9MM will pass on through up close. In the case of a 40S&W, I really don't know.

Like the cave man in the commercial says, "Yeah, I've got something to say, uh, WHAT?"

You'd better hope, and you'd better believe that that .45 round will "pass through". There's not a caliber short of a 105 howitzer that will "knock a man off his feet". And, if you don't make a hole all the way through, you ain't gonna incapacitate as quickly. If you're shooting ball ammo, not only is it going to pass all the way through, it's going to do minimal tissue damage in the process! A fast stepping .357 magnum round WILL expand and WILL totally penetrate. The .45 will do the same with the right bullet/load. That's about all you can ask of a handgun. Knocking 'em off their feet only happens in the movies. Heck, even a 7mm remington magnum doesn't knock a 100 lb doe off her feet, I can attest to that. Blow the off side shoulder off her and completely penetrate while ruining most of the front shoulders and killing instantly? SURE! But, knock her off her feet? Never happened to me and we're talking 3,000 ft lbs vs under 400 in your .45.

The .40 is a fine cartridge that will do the job quite well. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I'd rather have the 45ACP. It's been the gold standard for nearly 100 years.

I know that accuracy is the key determinant in ending a threat, that being said, do you need a .45? That is up to you. My opinion is I would rather be hitting vital areas, or just missing vital areas with the biggest bullet that is reasonable.

Do the .05 make a difference between life and death, in some instances I'm sure they can. I have read numerous stories of people being shot and the bullet JUST missing a vital area that may have killed the person. With expansion upwards of over .75" in the .45 ACP, like I said before, I would just as soon be shooting a bigger bullet with a better chance of doing more harm.

The .40 is great too, and as I said at the beginning, it comes down to accuracy, so if you think you can shoot it, get it.

As others have asked, what's need have to do with it?
I asked myself the same question about 18 months ago. Do I need a .45? Just mull that over in your head for a while, and repeat it. Do I need a .45? Do I need a .45? Do I need a .45?

Pretty soon the ? falls off of the end of the sentence, being replaced by a ! and then the words rearrange slightly, and then....

I Do need a .45!

See, that didn't hurt at all, did it?
:D

OK I need a .45 I will ask my friend how much will he let them go for. Thanks for conviencing me.:)

Well, according to the internet and validated by those weird guys who hang out at the gun store, the .45ACP is so powerful that, even if you miss your adversary, the shockwave of the round will tear a hole in the fabric of space and time and suck him in.

One of the guys actually had a cousin whose best friend's nephew's gunsmith saw it happen

So, just to be on the safe side, I have three.

It's a marvelous round. In my hands, it's more accurate to shoot than the .40, which I've always found to be snappy and unpleasant. The .45 is like a firm push backwards, but it's much easier to keep a consistent sight-picture with it.

I'm not much of a "caliber guy," but I couldn't imagine shooting a Sig P220 or 1911 in any other caliber.

Do you need a 45?

I don't think you can make that decision on this side of owning one...Buy it, shoot it, then ask yourself if you need it. (Maybe it needs you...)
Cheers, TF

If all you're worried about is the cost of ammo, don't let that stop you. Just buy the gun, put it in the gun safe, and don't even think about shooting it. The gun won't eat anything, but you'll always have it.

I'll bet that won't last long, but you can try it.

(I have to watch my wife and make sure she keeps her greedy little hands off my Commander. She keeps saying "I really like this one." I lose more guns that way.)

Personally I just find myself most accurate with a .45ACP, and prefer the feel of shooting it to the 9mm or 40SW. Just feels like a better personal defense round, and more fun at the range in my opinion.

You NEED a .45 1911. Trust me.

Of course you do. Silly question.
hahaha

I like the lower pressure of the 45. I've never liked the snappiness of the 40 so I'm biased. I'm a fan of lower pressures, heavier bullets, to hell with velocity (as long as it provides ample penetration which the 45acp does).

I thought 45 and 40 ammo were about the same price? That shouldn't be a deciding factor.

My 2 cents.
