I was just thinking about how everyone says, I don't let anyone know I have guns....

But in some arguments people bring up the city Kennesaw, Georgia and talk about how crime is low because criminals know that the people own guns. So which is it? Do criminals look for gun owners, or stay away from them?

I'm a collector.
All my close friends and relatives know I have guns.
They're as secure as I can make them ,in a Winchester gun safe,a closet safe bolted to the floor, and of course, on my person.
This doesn't mean I'm immune to theft. It could happen someday.

I think criminals generally assume people are armed when they break in. People around me know I own guns, just not what kind necessarily. If it ever comes up, I just say I have a handgun or shotgun. That stuff is on a need to know basis.

Where I live 99.9% of the people own guns. I could see where that really depends on where you live though.

I am in rural KY. Were packin.

catfish101, I am right there in rural KY with ya, and heck yes, almost everyone here has a gun.

When I talk about guns, it's normally to a fellow gun enthusiasts. Not too often do I mention guns to an anti-gunner. I think it's fine to let people know, however, as a deterent. If you lock your guns in a safe when you leave, they shouldn't be able to get to them if your house was broken into. After telling someone you have guns, I doubt they'll break in when you are home.

generally no, but I also don't let people know I have a shop full ( and garage for that a matter) of tools, lots of things I collect/ like to own, most poeple would not know.

it would be hard to miss me taking a gun from the house to the car... on one of my range trips.

I was reading the thread and thinking exactly what TAB posted. I carry a mess-o-guns out to the car every weekend. Be kinda silly to think the neighbors don't notice. Also, my wife OCs pretty often. She can get by with it sans hassle, being so cute and young and all.

I like to hold my cards a little closer to my chest. Company can come over and see one of my safes in the front room. They do not know what is in it nor do they ever get into my little shop. Thats a fact.

I honestly don't know. I suppose the ones that are close to me do. I sure don't make any real effort to hide it. I don't take out adds in the newspaper or post billboards proclaiming it either, unless you count open carry about half the time, but I'm sure a few people know.

Most any house a criminal broke into around here would have at least one I suppose so I don't really worry about that any more than I'd worry about someone breaking in period.

I don't worry too much about "anti's." I've never actually met one. I've met people who don't own guns, and don't care much about them, but I've never actually met anyone who was against them.

My crack head neighbors know that I own a gun, they don't know that I own some guns. other than that my close freinds know. and of course people on the range, I'm not an activist.

Yes, with the amount of .22 I go through in the back yard, all my neighbors know I own guns. They also know when my daughter isnt here, because I shoot louder calibers then. I know they own guns too, because they shoot too. I would imagine that I live in a pretty well-armed community.

Everyone in my family knows. That includes my in-laws. I dont have many friends, but they know.

I'm the "gun guy" at work.

I dont advertise the fact that I'm a gun owner, but I dont do much to hide it either.

I live in the very northern part of the UP. We have about 80% gun ownership up here. Most homes have at least one firearm in it. My coworkers (only people I associate with besides family) know I own guns, roll my own ammo, and sell guns as a side business.

I only have a few, and they're locked up.

When I go to the local range, which is (lucky for me) only a few miles, they're cased. But, as someone else said, gun cases are pretty obvious.

I don't feel comfortable with "advertising". No NRA stickers on truck, and no "Vote NRA-ILA" signs in lawn.

While advertising firearms ownership is the classic concern, there is also some reason to not advertise on your truck that you're a diver, either. It's kind of like saying, "There may be some expensive dive gear in this truck!" :)

I wish that theft wasn't so commonplace. It isn't that I'm not proud of my hobbies, but I don't want to give the :cuss: parasites any advantage.

I do absolutely nothing to hide the fact that I own guns.

I open carry.

I talk about guns and hunting with anyone who'll listen.

I have a collection of cartridges on my desk at work.

I don't advertise ownership so to speak but I don't hide it either. Most of my co-workers around the world and friends know I own guns and have a recreational shooting hobby ... (and of course value it for self defense).

I think it helps for some of use to be good ambassadors. Look, a well dressed, educated law abiding citizen .... and he owns guns - and does it responsibly. People who have no exposure or knowledge (see the threads on the FX 30 Days episode) need to see and hear from people who aren't criminals or thugs, people who are responsible safe gun owners.

Oh, I have a small NRA sticker on the back window of my car and routinely wear an NRA hat.

I live in South Mississippi. The wierd ones are the ones that DON'T have guns.

It's just kinda assumed.

I think the less peope know that you have a gun or guns, the better off you are. As in a robbery or a home invasion. surprise!!!!!

Ok, but then why do people think that criminals will avoid well armed citizens?

That is what I want to know. Does having a gun in the home make you more or less likely to be robbed?

On one hand, guns are valuable and easy to sell, on the other I may use a gun to defend myself from home intruders....

Most know the wife and I own a lot of guns...we are collectors and avid shooters. Most of those who know also own guns, shoot a lot and so on.Most also know our guns and other possessions are well guarded, under safe and vault 'lock and key'.
