I find loading ammunition quite pleasant, and shooting that ammunition equally satisfying, but similarly I make a few parts for my motorcycle which I enjoy both making the parts, and using them on the bike. A direct analagous hobby of mine is in fly tying which I enjoy almost as much as reloading, and catching fish on a hand tied fly is quite similar to the rush of bagging a whitetail with a hand loaded precision round.

So do the majority of reloaders have other hobbies which directly support other things that they enjoy, as in producing the bits and pieces used in another enjoyable practice?

I would say so.

I also tie my own flies, and you're right, there's nothing like catching a nice trout or other fish on a home tied fly.

I also make bonsai trees. Which with those, it's about attention to detail and then seeing that tree become something I imagined in my head.

It's golf for me. For many years, I've crafted custom golf clubs. They are far more accurate and serviceable than the implements off-the-shelf

For both hobbies, hitting the target is paramount, although the skill-set required for each is quite different. Both are very challenging & enjoyable :)

I have no "productive" other hobbies.

Im only reloading because 300 blackout subsonic is $1/round and I can load it for 25-.30 with FMJ or .10/round with cast.

I love building/making things, especially from scratch. I save all kinds of scrap.

I have several hobbies, most of the work together. Spend most of my time in the restoration shop at a train museum. Blacksmith, machinist, woodworking, photographer, editor and mechanical engineer. Also an aviation enthusiast where I use my photography skills. Antique trucks involves mechanics and photography. My only non-productive hobby is consuming craft beer.

Maybe you better redefine productive. Everything I make is destructive!

Hmmmm...I see that others have interesting second hobbies too.

I also like to make stuff out of scrap and spare parts.
I've been trying to add a "SteamPunk" look to some of the items I make.
Working on a small pot belly wood stove now made of a 5gal propane tank.

I also love to weld and some wood work.
I Love YouTube....:D

Reloading is my quiet time hobby, by myself with no interruptions.
It's peaceful to me. ( And casting bullets )

I have several other hobbies.

I have a nice fab shop at the house for building/repairing stuff, building the ultimate model airplane that is big enough to ride in (light sport category:)), build and race cars, amateur radio, and groom for my wife's horses.

It's forty years of collecting stuff. Not all hobbies are active at the same time, but, I never completely divest myself of a hobby as i usually pick it up again. Some go dormant for a while depending on season, trade winds, or other activities that tug on my time.

Do motorbicycling, cars, shooting, cooking, lubricants, and hiking count?

EDITS:

Plus bass guitar, bass amps, investing, running TWO businesses (sickbikeparts.com and Amsoil), dogs, and apparently getting packages delivered.

I used to brew beer (tastes TOO good, too many calories, not good for concentration), fish (a lot more), hunt (a lot more) but my daughters came along and became more than a hobby. They pretty much became my life. Oldest is out of the house, youngest is now almost 17 (cheerleader, artist, great student).

For me it's no. I have no skills with my hands, so making stuff is difficult at best. But hand loading ammo, I have found, requires no skill, just an attention to detail and concentration. Thank goodness.

Great thread WestKen. It's nice to see something a little different.

Its also nice to get the chance to learn a little bit about all of the folks that I interact with around here everyday. Thanks.

For me, I guess the only other hobby I really have is the singer/songwriter/guitarist thing. Writing, singing, and recording my songs, has always been there for me through the years.

If something breaks that I can fix, I'll fix it. I also build guitar amps, tie flies, along with lots of other stuff. I'd like to build my own fly rods at some point and possibly build my own guitars. I don't know if that's analogous, but it's very much a part of me being a DIY-er in many, many ways.

Got some really cool stuff going on here with good folks. As mentioned in my original post I have a few hobbies that feed hobbies, and sometimes breed new hobbies. I have been shooting and fishing since I was about 4. My allowance went to 22 ammo then, And when I was 8 we got a minibike for me and my sister. Those 3 hobbies have grown and expanded. I now reload for relaxation, shoot for fun, and my excuse for the bike was cheap range trips to ranges an hour or more away which are near waterfalls and such. The ammo can was for handguns snd ammo, the kolpin case for long guns, but it has been used for golf clubs, fishing rods etc. The fly tying came of necessity since there are no fly shops in western kentucky, and there's no such thing more fun than a 3 or 4 pound bass on a fly rod. The bike kinda ties everything together though.

I don't know, I've caught channel catfish on mine. That's tough. Bass are a heck of a lot of fun on a fly rod. Heck, it's fun catching any fish on a fly rod. Lol

I like to burn things and blow them up.:fire: Seems related.

OH wait that was my childhood.

Built a couple radios and some antennas for amateur radio, but much less active there nowadays.
I enjoy making my own beer, wine and mead. I grow my hops for the beer, and for the mead I recently began to keep my own bees. Beekeeping has opened a new world of building gear. Either pay a fortune for hives and their parts, or build my own!

I brew beer and mead. Tried growing hops but it didn't work in S fla. Built 3 boats, used to tie flies also.

Run my own business, enjoy whitewater kayaking and rafting, stream fishing and THEME PARKS.

Previously it was paintball, mountain biking and skiing.

So, no. I probably should never have picked up that Ruger 22/45.:p
