Refuse to buy a revolver with a lock, is Smith & Wesson the only one to shove this feature down our throats?

Some Ruger revolvers have one in them, not sure if it's standard or not. However, have to take the grips off to use it. I have never heard of them locking on their own like S&W's and they're not visible so they don't bother me. One would never know it's there. It was a smart way to go, unlike S&W, since it meets many silly state's requirements but is unobtrusive and doesn't mess up anything. Likely easily removed if you wanted it gone.

Your call if that knocks them out of the race for you.

My SP101 didn't have a lock, just a huge rollmark on the barrel that said "READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL". It was like bringing a nagging wife to the range.

Taurus has locks on theirs as well, but if you don't bother them they won't bother you.

Ruger put internal locks in the New Vaquero and several other single action models and then recently phased them out. They were unobtrusive and easy to ignore with no reports of them locking themselves. Ruger has never put an internal lock in a double action.

Still there but now rolled to the underside of the barrel, and shortened from the old style long winded warning

The LCRs had them, I dont know if the new ones do. As stated above, Ruger did have them on the bottom of the mainspring, inside the grip, but has been phasing them out. GP100 and SP101 never had them.

The New Vaquero .357 I bought earlier this year has no lock except the big separate padlock that was in the box. Didn't have that ugly lawyer's billboard on the side of the barrel either - the downsized version is out of sight under the barrel:

Pretty sure my Ruger Flattop Blackhawk in .44 Special has the hidden lock in the grip frame but since it's totally unobtrusive there (as well as being totally unused and unwanted), I sure wouldn't let that keep me from buying it. My S&W Model 638 does have the lock but again I don't use it and it has never been a problem with my using the gun for it's intended purpose, namely concealed carry.

Shoving it down your throat?

Good grief, nobody is shoving anything down your throat.

Can you find any clue at all that there is a lock inside this New Vaquero? Is there any telltale key hole like there is on a S&W?

The gray, rectangular casting below the mainspring is the lock. If you look at the plastic grip, you will notice a dimple just above the scratched on Serial Number. The idea is if you want to use the lock, you drill out a small hole in the grip at the dimple, so you can insert the key. If you don't want to use the lock, you don't drill out the hole and you simply ignore the fact that the lock is there. I bought this Vaquero the second year of production, in 2006. I have never used the lock, and it has never given me any trouble at all. I have completely forgotten it is there. This is a much more subtle solution than the hole in the frame that all Smiths have today.

Shoved down my throat! Sheesh!

As for the 'lawyer's billboard' that so many object to, here it is. Again, as subtle as possible. I have completely forgotten it is there and I only look at it when I see posts like this.

As I say, I bought this New Vaquero in 2006 and I have no idea what the newer ones have inside them. But you could not find a more subtle, less intrusive example of a lock on a firearm no matter how hard you looked.

My LCR definitely has one. I just ordered a new one for my dad for Christmas, I'll check it and see of it does still.

I tell you what, I too hate those billboard comments on my guns. But then I hate having "Ford" all over my pickup truck, "Acer" on my laptop, "Liberty" on my gun safe and all the other intrusive words and pictures I can't stand having to buy.

I can take a measure of solace I guess from the fact there are no little blue bear pictures on the toilet paper.

My NM Blackhawk has the lock but it is identical to the one in Drifwood's post above.

Not even noticeable unless you remove the grips. Naturally I have not drilled out the indention to make use of it and never will. I literally would not have know it was there if I hadn't removed the grips to put on some rubber Pachmyers (which came right back off).

The only thing to keep in mine is if you put custom grips on it is that it changes a little. Some grips for the old ones that didn't have the lock won't fit on the new ones with it. Or so I'm told. I've never tried it myself.

Lock? What lock?

Prior to this thread, I had no IDEA Ruger offered anything besides the high quality padlock w/ their guns (got a buddy that uses those on his farm gates). Anyway, it is extraordinarily subtle and unlike the S&W Hillary hole. So I applaud Ruger for managing to keep their attorneys happy while also not offending Joe Shooter like me. Job well done Ruger! :D
