Do you owe a criminal assailant a fair fight?

Hi Phyphor

The way I see it, a fair fight for you is one you win.

To me the 'fair fight' is the fight that never happened because the aggressor decided it to be a bad idea. I really don't care if the revelation came from an LEO, a large male relative, a cast iron skillet or a readily available sidearm.

If that doesn't happen- all's fair in love and war. As someone far wiser than I used to say: when you have them by *a certain body part* their hearts and minds are going to follow.

Until I see it in my states laws that I am obligated to take a beating, for doing nothing illegal, that could end in my death or permanent maiming , I will defend myself using the force I deem neccesary.

As many have already posted.

I do not go to bars. I do not start fights, I walk away if possible. I do not hang around in rough company. I do not do the things that would commonly endanger me to having to get in a fight. I have managed to avoid serious fights for well over twenty five years. I am getting old, have a bum shoulder and knee. I would not last long in a serious fight.

I have the money in the bank to defend myself and do have a family lawyer that will pick up in the middle of the night. While I would prefer not to have the guilt over killing someone, I will not hesitate to protect myself from an assailant from whom I do not know his intentions.

I will use every available lesser means to stop the assault before lethal force is brought to bear, but before a hand is laid on me, I am willing to use deadly force to protect myself if I deem it neccesary.

Take it for what it's worth.

Post 2, the first reply, already summed it up. If your life or well being is on the line, win at ALL costs. There is nothing too extreme you can do to preserve your own life. Win. That's it. Just win. All else doesn't exist at the moment.

i agree, if i have to rip an ear off or someones nuts.. etc.. i'm going for broke and i have no problem with that..

a fight and a violent attack are completely different to me. If you're in a fight, then fight. If you're in a violent situation, then fight, stab, shoot, and/or run.

"Fight back! Whenever you are offered violence, fight back! The aggressor does not fear the law, so he must be taught to fear you. Whatever the risk, and at whatever the cost, fight back!"
-Mr. Jeff Cooper

Never am I going to give an assailant a "fair" fight. If i have to bite, gouge eyes, or anything of the sort to live, then i will do it. The only fair fight is in the schoolyard where the teachers break up the scuffle or in the Mess Hall where you all get punished. I have a weak left lung due to an injury I sustained in an automobile accident, I cannot fight for an extended period of time with an assailaint. Im doing whatever it takes to win and win fast and gurantee i am justified.

If an unarmed person attacks you and you armed you should do your best to get away. But, if that person were to get the best of you what is to say they will not use your own weapon against you? I would say that if you cannot get away that justifies the use of deadly force to protect your life.

Personally I do not generally go to places where I would be thrust in to a dangerous situation, but if I were I would do my best to make it out of the situation alive. I am a law aboding citizen. Anyone that attacks me is not. Fair fight or otherwise, me protecting MY right to life supercedes the criminals when he decides to attack me and possibly use my own gun against me.

I think I'd have to (if possible) split the difference between what's best for me in the fight & what's best in court. So I'd fight to stay alive but not go out of my way to kill the assailant

Wow a threadsurection!!!

I like what Dr. Laura has said about this...

If someone hits you, you're morally obligated to defend yourself and you should hit them back twice as hard.

And I really love it when she convinces callers to get a gun and take training classes on it's use for self defense.

She also promotes the martial arts.

Basically if someone attacks me (mugger, crazy, etc.) I will use any and all means necessary to end the threat. If he brought a knife to a gun fight that's his tough luck...

There is no honor is giving a fair fight to a criminal when you have a family to get home to.

Since I am over 70 and female my answer is NO! Nothing stops an asailant better than a sucking chest wound made by a 45 cal Kimber Ultr Carry.

"Are you supposed to give your assailant a "sporting chance" and use only your hands and feet to defend yourself?"

Not here in OK. The law says that I do not have to. Recently there was a case in Lawton where an unarmed, big dumb 17 year old kid broke into a house. He was caught coming out of the house by the owner's son. The big dummy charged the guy and was shot dead.

Prosecutor ruled it justified homicide and declined to prosecute. No grand jury, no nothing. The family cannot even sue the shooter in civil court.

all's fair in love and war
"fair" in that sense is meant to be synonymous with "fair game," as in no-holds-barred... including being unfair ;)

It doesn't mean "equal."

Using a firearm in self defense is considered using deadly force. In many states an unarmed bare handed attack is not.
Let's say that you have a concealed carry permit and some thug attacks you bare handed. Are you supposed to give your assailant a "sporting chance" and use only your hands and feet to defend yourself? It seems that the law doesn't take into account who is in "the wrong" in some states.

Just curious, OS
i know in alabama, according to a few LEO friends that the size etc of both you and the assailant are taken into consideration, for example, you weigh 125lbs and two guys weighing 250 each and look like they could bench pick up trucks attack you then you are full within your right to shoot them both

Two kinds of fools:

1. Mr. Bad thinks he can win anytime or get away with almost anything;
2. One who underestimates what his victim could do to counter him.

Same thing, really-different ways of defining Mr. Bad's short-sightedness, and your 'potential' (or someone else's) response to his threat.

but in the words of Anthony(local cop)

"It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6"

Fair?

When your life is at stake, ALL is fair.

I am more than willing to be fair by sharing my ammo with him. I'll hand the bullets to him one a time at 1000+ fps. That is unless he breaks into my house, then I'll give them to him faster from the barrel of my 12 gauge.
