As someone who lives on the east cost, not needing a magnum big-game rifle, I have chosen a TC encore with a custom barrel chamberd for 6.5x55 SE. I was just wondering how many of you have non-surplus bolt-action or single shot rifles chambered for that caliber or the .260 and how you feel about it.

I have a Remington Model 700 Classic in 6.5 X 55 Swedish and really like it. Recoil is light enough that even my daughter has no problem with it, even at the range after a number of rounds. For the hunting in Central Texas at least, it is just about perfect.

I really like the round and had planned to add a CZ550 to go with my mil-surp Swede, but then moved up here to Alaska, where 6.5x55 is a little on the light side.

I killed many deer with 7x57 and 6.5x55. I did a downselect a couple years ago, and kept my Interarms Mark X Mauser Sporter in 7x57, since I found it more versatile to reload and get components, although components for both are plentiful now. The 6.5x55 was a Husqvarna, and a friend has it now.

The cartridge is a great little number. Shoots flat, medium recoil, plenty accurate.

There are also a number of factory 6.5 Swedes on the used market.

I really like my M70 Classic, and after bedding, the M700 shoots great.

Converting a M96 to a sporter configuration is just a bad idea, and you don't save money in the long run.

i have a remington xp-100R in 260 rem. and a browning 1885 low wall in 260 rem.,like them both. eastbank.

Nice, SlamFire1. Two of my all time favorites. Browning 1885's are nice too, my grandfather bought one, in .223 because it was the cheapest one avail...

Sure do, own two as a matter of fact. A CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 and a Mauser M96 American straight pull bolt (made in the 90s) in 6.5x55. The 6.5x55 makes an excellent Deer cartridge with fairly mild recoil.

Sweet, can you post a pic of that straight bolt rifle. I would love to own one, German rifles are a little out of my price range right now though

My custom M98 in 6.5x55 was my deer rifle for 25 years and it never failed. Exceptionally accurate, mild recoil .As Finn Aagaard said , the perfect deer cartridge !!
That said , at this point I have my reservations. The factory loads are wimpy due to old guns. The American companies are loading it but they use a case based on the .473 dia instead of the proper larger case -not good for accuracy.
If you're a handloader then get a 6.5x55SE chamber , reamer and dies, and load it properly .You should get at least 2750 with the 140 Gr bullet and modern rifle. That will get the job done !!
The SE version finally is the compromise between Norwegian and Swedish military dimensions. Yes Norwegian !! They used the Krag while Sweden used the Mauser.I get tired of seeing the round called "Swedish" .6.5x55 and oldy but goody !

With my 28" Obermeyer, I get 2950fps with the 139-142gr bullets.

I should have said "within reasonable pressures " 2750-2850 with 140 gr.

A 28" barrel is good for an extra 100 fps vs. a typical 24" barrel. Meaning: USSR's load ain't that hot. Probably, right at 50,000 CUP, if he's using proper handloading techniques.

Yeah, a long, high quality barrel is good for quite a bit more velocity. Also, as Kernel noted, I'm operating at the 50,000 CUP pressure level, not the 46,000 CUP level forced upon the 6.5x55 due to the possibility that the cartridge may be used in an old single-lug Norwegian Krag. When you are using a modern commercial rifle, you can operate at normal pressure levels.
